Upgrade from Windows ME to XP?

All my programs that I was using under Windows ME I have been able to install and run under Windows XP. To name a few: Quicken, TaxCut, Microsoft Streets & Trips, Norton SystemWorks, Microsoft Office 2000, as well as many others. The Office 2000 includes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook and I haven't had any problems running any of them under Windows XP Professional. The only problem I encountered after installing XP was when I tried to restore my files that were backed up using MSBackup under ME. That has been a frustrating hassle to go back and retrieve my old files. Fortunately, I had also been backing up my quicken files with the backup feature inside Quicken, which were easily restored under XP using Quicken itself.

You'll lose the Word program when you format your hard drive, but if you have the Office disk, reinstalling it shouldn't be much of a problem. (as long as you still have the keycode)

You'll lose all of your programs like Kazza and Quicken, but those can always be reinstalled. BUT MAKE SURE ANY FILES YOU WANT TO KEEP ARE BACKED UP

If you are nervous about screwing anything up or miss backing up any files you need, you could always find another hard drive and ghost a copy to fall back on.

A 1300mhz and 256mb of RAM is more than sufficient for running XP. Since it's a Gateway, installing another OS on your own may void any warranties/services.(I really don't know if it would or not, you would be more familiar with your user agreement than I am)

Also, after you install XP, you might want to go to www.bigfix.com to install updates and patches.

*Never* upgrade a Microsoft OS. Clean install or wait until you can. The_Bass has the right idea.

If you purchased the Windows XP upgrade CD you can still clean install. During the installation if the upgrade CD doesn't find a qualifying product to upgrade it'll ask you for the install media of the qualifying product. All you do is slip in a WinME CD so the installer can verify that you do own a copy of WinME to upgrade and away you go.

It has to be a Win98/98SE/ME/2K CD, though - either OEM, volume license or retail. System restore CDs won't work.

This post is kina old so my 2 cents is useless at this point but for anyone else wondering...

Step 1 - Back up EVERYTHING you want to save.

Step 2 - Install WindowsXP Pro and make sure you do a 100% clean install, overwrite everything during upgrades if possible. (NOT HOME! God help you if you install winXP home or ME. 90% of the computers I service are windows ME or XP home!)

Step 3 - Restore your Backed up files.

Step 4 - Be happy that you didn't just pay some tech (me) $100+ to install a OS that is already going to cost you $100+ =)

Seriously though if you have any problems let me know, I have books FILLED with my notes on ME and XP home lol.

Go to the Microsoft website and look for the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 305381 for an explanation as to why MSbackup files from Windows ME cannot be restored under Windows XP.

I'm repeating this earlier post so someone else might avoid the hassles I had last Spring. If you're using another backup program, such as "NTI BackUp NOW", you shouldn't have a problem restoring your files. But, If you're using MSbackup, you're in for a disappointment!

The plus side is, I really appreciate the Windows XP Pro over the Windows ME!!! Best thing I've done for the computer in a long time.
