Upgrade recording hardware

I've had one of these roland unit's for the past 6 years and it's served me well
Invalid Link Removed

Recently got a recording desk with 4 rack mounts and looking to upgrade to a rack mount unit with possibly better recording quality. I dont want to break the bank, since i just do home recordings, dont need a ton of inputs, USB and on a PC based ableton laptop.
looking for suggestions!

You didn't stay what your budget is, but I would go with the best product which in turn gives you the most up to date drivers. As you can see edirol which is owned by Roland isn't the best with its drivers, but not the worse either. Maybe you had a different experience as you had this interface for six years. To be honest, I would go with some of the more and maybe slightly more money interfaces with the better converters. What comes to mind is RME babyface. It goes for around 699.00 in blue. (The silver is slightly less than the blue for some odd reason, both give you the same product). Maybe a little above in price than you are looking at but what you get for the price is fantastic. Its small and can grow with you as the back has an adat input and output so you can get an additional mic pre (rack mount) therefore you can have more inputs latter on. The sound is great.

Hey Bassist30, thanks for the info. Yeah my experience with Roland is they stop supporting things a couple years after release to try to get people upgrade to the next hardware release.
I'll look into the RME as well. i was also looking at the Focusrite scarlett 18i20, and presonus 1818 audiobox but wanted to keep the purchase to $300.00 or less so might just go for a used one. Wondering if the recorded sound quality would be that much greater on these audio interfaces compared to my eidorol or a Mbox from around that era

Believe it or not I used a Steinberg ur22 and a motu hybrid. Their was an instance difference. Even the buffering rate was different. As far as what sounds good with comparing interfaces you should talk and listen on the site gearslutz.com.
Here you will get many opinions from other audio engineers and musicians alike. Many thought the 16 bit interfaces were pretty much the same as 24 bit. Converters play a big part regarding the final mix. True when you compare the under 1000 dollar to each other the differences are not as noticeable as compared to the higher more professional model. Its like comparing similar bass cabs and amps. If you listen to both with no eq (not flat) at all they may sound somewhat similar. When you ad eq the differences will be more noticeable. Same when you start adding eq, compression, etc, to a recording.
