Upgrading from combo to cab/head

I'm looking to upgrade from my combo amp to a cab/head. I'm looking to spend between $250-$850 on a cabinet. I'm hoping to borrow a friends head for a bit till I can get more cash to buy a decent head. Should I get a head before a cabinet?

The Fender Bassman 410 Neo looks pretty cool. But is worth it compared to a Fender Rumble 410? Any suggestions would be appreciated. For background, I play in a punk band. The other musicians play very loud & sometimes I play a guitar so I'd want an amp that sounds decent with both bass/guitar.

Are these two amps technically combo amps? They look to be cabinets to me, but I'm not sure.

If you have a head you can use in the meantime, it may be smart to buy the cab first. But you'd probably want to have a head picked out already, so you can make sure the cab you get will work with it.

Look on Craigslist for used gear. I saw a 4X10 GK cab and a bass amp head for around $400 this week, it sold fast. I would have bought the rig if I didn't already have the leaning tower of speaker cabinets in the spare bedroom.

I'd go for an ampeg classic series cab. They are relatively cheap and last forever. I played a 810e for over ten years with no problems. Then downsized to the 410he. The 410hlf might actually be cheaper in the long run then the 410he in order to get a good tone. Being an 8 ohm cab the 410he requires a more powerful head to sound best. So just to keep the numbers easy to think about you can pay more for the hlf and buy a cheaper head that does say 500w @4ohms. Or you could get the 410he and buy a more expensive head that does 1000w at 4ohms and 500w@8ohms. Either way you'll end up happier than with a combo.

pick up a hartke 3500 and a peavey or ampeg 4x10 used and you'll have solid gear that will work well for your music and change left from your budget to boot.

It wouldn't hurt to check out the Carvin website while you're looking - they have some nice stuff for the money.
