UPRIGHT SOUND

Just wondering if anyone has found a bass with a GOOD upright sound....(If so, what are you using?)

Rob Allen Mouse 30 is pretty good. The Guild Ashbory is a tad better, but a royal pain to play and keep strung/in tune.

Thanks spade2you....I'll do some research on those. I'm NOT an upright player...and we do LOTS of Country/Rock...I'm just wondering what some of you use to get a good sound...something versitile. I tried a couple UB's but I wasn't pleased with the sound when plucked....I would like to find a bass guitar that does the trick. Does Hofner or Jack Cassidy sound round and FULL?

I heard Jimmy Haslip with the Yellowjackets a couple of weeks in a smallish club in AZ. He had a KILLER upright sound on one tune out of his MTD. I've been told that it'd chambered with a Piezo pickup to get that sound...

Bass Player did an article about Jimmy and in it he stated that he had the piezo added to that bass specifically to get that sound. Did he have it effected at all or direct to his amp??

I get good results from(believe it or not) my Wishbass Hyper. Granted I spent a month of Sundays refinishing it and got a wood bridge for it and all, but that bass through my nanoverb into my walkabout gives me all the thick Double tone I need.

I use a Rob Allen Mouse 30 as well.

Actually, any of Rob Allen's basses will get you there, but the Mouse 30 being a short scale bass seems to have that little something extra in the tone.

Other than that, there is a fretless Jazz bass that sound very uprightish. I'm at a loss to what the name of the manufacture was. Hopefully someone out there knows what I'm talking about and can post it. I'll try and find the thread on it.

Nope...straight from the bass.

Dang near anything chambered with a piezo and flatwound/nylon wound strings will usually get the job done.

I 2nd or 3rd the mention of a Rob Allen. I have an MB-2 with the black LaBella tapewounds. Awesome upright tone when plucked near the neck.

I think I've found the URB sound. I bought a Micheal Kelly Dragonfly III fretless 5 string. My guitarist has a deal with them & I glommed onto his deal. Anyway, I hated the sound it had with those terrible brass roundwounds. It also made a sitar like sound in a few spots where some of the extensive inlay had risen. I put some Dogal Jaco flats on it & had the fingerboard radiused. The first time I played it on a gig, the band was freaked. I mean this thing sounds just like an upright. Not sorta like one. I get gigs for C&W bands & they will request I bring it. The folks at MK are pleased as well. Forget how it sounds unplugged. It's a monster thru your rig.

Most of the URB sound-alikes really depend mostly on strings and technique ie. longer sustained notes with well judged vibrato and slides. This used with a good EQ setting can get a upright sorta sound in the mix so to speak.
One thing I saw on Ebay item no. 290160617972 looks interesting it's a standard looking bridge with individual piezo pickups for each string.
