While visiting UB today I got to assemble and play the new travel bass. Fooking amazing!
The one in the shop is Prototype #1. They have already moved past it and more refinements are coming, but the basic notion really works. It is 100% of a 3/4 plywood bass, not half a bass, not bass-y plank. It plays like an Upton (which anybody reading this knows is high praise). It is checkable as regular luggage and can be tossed into a taxi trunk etc. It can be assembled in fifteen minutes by a flippin' lawyer.
This thing is a game-changer for travel-bass seekers.

Speaking of rattles, my end pin rattles bit until really have it settled the groove. Its an Upton bass. Suggestions?
Hey guys, quick question. From what Eric told me, the solo fingerboard extension only adds a couple notes to the fingerboard. I personally am interested in it because of the way it looks, but how functional do you find it to be if you have it?
Depends on how much you solo up there, I think. I've had Upton basses with and without them. Tonally no difference.
I had the solo extension added on my Bohemian because of the look...I just like it. And I don't even play in the thumb position! They also made a custom tailpiece (ebony/byrdseye maple/ebony) with the opposite slope and it looks killer.
I've got one of these, before it was a prototype, and am quite pleased with it. I ordered an Upton Standard with the removable neck, and Eric was nice enough to throw in the lightweight neck, lightweight tuners, composite tailpiece, and carbon fiber end pin. The bass is extremely resonant for a ply; so much so that I do get an intermittent rattle that sounds like the bolt rattling in the neck joint. It seems to come and go (I've had it into the shop in Mystic, but of course it doesn't do it there; like the strange noise your car makes that goes away when you bring it into the shop). It always goes away if I make sure to play down close to the end of the fingerboard. I've tried a number of fixes myself; my next one will be to take the bolt out and melt some shrink wrap around the unthreaded part of the bolt to try to cushion it a little. I'd classify this as a minor annoyance rather than a problem; I don't notice it on the gig. As I said, I'm very happy with this instrument and have gotten some very positive comments from other musicians. I hope they come out with the lightweight travel case soon!

Yes indeed. A world of difference. The suitcase bass is a giant step forward. It is truly portable yet at first pass it looked regular to you -- a seasoned DB player and an Upton travel-rig customer.
It's going to be fun to see where people bring it. I can't wait to see vids of people playing DB in places where DB has literally never gone before!

I'm not so sure they are officially selling it yet, but could be wrong. All i've seen is the teaser video.
Thankfully he played the same lick in g that he plays in every single one of his demo videos
On this day, 2 years ago, I was uncrating my Upton UB Standard! We're still getting to know each other's innermost thoughts and feelings, but she's a keeper!
