I am not sure yet what the next one will be . I love my ply standard and play out allot , to me that bass is perfect for that . I will always have my Standard ply and am thinking I would like to have a flat back hybrid , I love the Brescian but the Karr has my attention as well , I need to get to the shop !

Double Bass Upton Bass Club

Hey everybody. After much debate on what to get for my first double bass, I visited the Mystic store and made the decision to buy an Upton Standard Laminate. Unfortunately there is a 6 month wait but the excitement for it will probably kill me before the wait does. When I was there placing the order, I did not specify which pickup I wanted. From what I heard I liked the Revolution Solo the best and it is what I'm leaning towards. What do you guys use, and if it is the RS how is it in a gig setting? Is it loud enough without feedback and how does it sit in a mix? Thanks!
I have been using Upton's rev solo pickup they put on for me when I bought my Upton standard laminate . I in the last few months have done many gigs with this bass and pickup and it is great . I think with a acoustic instrument you will always have to deal with some feedback issues but to me it seems I have always been able to work it out , each room is so different . Our band is in the studio now doing our 3rd CD and the Upton laminate is sounding great , i am using some real nice microphones and not using the pick up but for live it has been working great , it is a fantastic set up , this is my first upright as well and I dig it !
Congrats on ordering your new UB Standard Laminate! I received mine in April of 2016 (first upright for me) and have been loving it.
I bought the Realist Lifeline pickup, based on testimonials and referrals. I'm in an area where there are no real bass shops within several hours' drive, so I couldn't test out anything for myself. The Lifeline works pretty well (about as well as any pickup CAN), but can tend to sound a bit 'quacky' at times - a pronounced mid-range 'thwack' with each pizzicato pluck. Sometimes EQing or reversing the phase on my preamp (ALiX) helps a little. But it's always there.
I was always curious about the Revolution Solo, but have never used one. From the demo videos, it seems like it is a little more adjustable (after installation) than the Lifeline, allowing for tweaking of the desired sound. Once the Lifeline is installed, you can't really move/adjust it without loosening the string tension to take the pressure off of the bridge.
There is a great YouTube video (in German, unfortunately) that compares about a dozen upright pickups and mics, all mounted on the same bass at the same time, for a more 'apples to apples' comparison: Invalid Link Removed
Obviously, many things will affect your live sound, in addition to your pickup - your technique, strings, preamp, amp, speaker cab, room, type of music, size/style of ensemble, etc. So, what works for one person may not work for another. I'm sure others will chime in here with their experiences, also.
Have to admit I'm not much of a fan of the Realist. Every time I get supplied a bass with one on the road, I have to dial in highs and dial back the lows. But I love the Rev Solo. Very low feedback, very natural tone even without EQ help, definitely the best pickup I've used. Plus if you get it from Upton, they'll install it for you and save you the trouble of sanding it to fit your bridge wing

I have tried the Realist, and currently have the Rev Solo installed. I do prefer the rev to the realist, but was able to get good tone with either. I recently picked up a Remic mic that I want to try, both solo, and blended with the pickup, at future gigs (haven't gigged the mic yet so jury is still out on that one).

Mystic is 43" high with a 40" string length--a smaller-sized bass, but with the wider upper bouts has a rich full-bodied sound. With low action set-up it's great for arco. I can't say enough about how pleased I am with Mystic and appreciative we are for Eric and his Upton Bass team.

I have both the Rev Solo II and copper Realist installed on my Upton Standard Lam right now. I think both pickups are effective, but usually default to the Realist. It gives some top interaction that i like to hear in the sound, and a nicer thump. The Realist also sounds good plugged directly into the amp without a preamp.
Rev Solo tends to have less thump and more high end, a more articulate pickup. I also feel it more so benefits from a preamp in the chain for some boost and tone shaping. I should probably start playing with it again.
Copper Realist to me is just more old school, dark and thumpy. Rev Solo is more new school, clear modern tone. Both pickups are fairly feedback resistant, so no worries there.

The Full Circle is pretty excellent, isn't it? Way better than that godawful BP100.
