Double Bass Upton Bass Club

did you play all the basses? what about the blondie behind you?
Haha. Nope. Actually, I heard Eric talking with Gary on the phone about how they would price some of those basses. The one I bought cost some coin, but the ones they were talking about would require me not to purchase groceries for a couple years.

Besides, I was too giddy with excitement about getting my hands on my long-awaited bass to be very aware of all those others around me.

Dang, shepdave and DonW - those are some pretty instruments.

A carved Bostonian and hybrid Brescian? Those would both be BEASTS!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate more pics. I'm a sucker for neck grain and scrolls/tuners! :D

@Ed S
Ask and ye shall receive…. ribs and tuners!

Thx. I had seriously considered a Brescian, but went with a 7/8 Bohunk instead. I dig the antiqued tuners. Those were gonna be my choice if I hadn't been able to get the ones I wanted. I bet that flame in the neck will become more prominent as you play it more.

Keep us posted as you get familiar with it!

Hey all! I just locked down a new commission for me! It is a bass they have NO name for! It will be a 41" mensur hybrid flatback, violin corners, and the upgraded 1000$ top. Lightly figured poplar flatback and sides. Also having the new tuners that Lauren Pierce put on herbass...much smaller gear ratio, REALLY distressed. Going to wear Spiro Welch's and a RS pickup. About 1 year wait! Wooo!

Anyone have the Upton C Extension on theirs? How do you like it?

I've never had an extension before and have only played one for a second once or twice, but in both orchestras I'm playing with guys have them and hitting that low C at the end makes me very jealous. I think I need one. I just don't know if I should do the full chromatic gate setup or only the E gate...

Believe it or not, next week I am driving from the DC area to Mystic to pick up my SECOND Upton bass! I gave my Shen hybrid to my son (a working, recording musician) for Christmas. So I ordered an Upton Standard laminate as my “beater” bass, for situations when I wouldn’t take the Bostonian out (outdoor gigs and such).

I expect this will be my last trek to the bass barn, but you never know. BTW, my wife was correct in doubting when I said the Bostonian would be my last new instrument, but she fully endorsed passing my Shen along to its new owner.
