Double Bass Upton Bass Club

Shame on you Eric, make yourself a beautiful bass! And get Gary off his bicycle long enough to play one too!
I know just what I would make too...have it all planned out. Feather light hybrid flat-back (very different configuration and thickness to the ply's on the back with minimal bracing...who knows...it might not be strong enough, so I'm the perfect test!) with a deluxe sitka top, very flamed maple back and ribs. Varnished like LouisF bass and VERY antiqued!

I just need to find another 40 hours a week to do it. Now where did I put all those extra hours?

That sounds like a great combination....I'm loving my Hybrid, and I loved the Standard (#001) that you made for me, but that was a little TOO light for where it had to live and work. The hybrid is holding up to Cape Cod weather just fine, and is getting lots of gig time.

Enjoy! I did!!! I love those Olive's with the Spiros. Eventually I will make myself a bass (Gary too, can you believe neither of us have our own basses???) and I am putting Olives on it when I do...

Thank You!

Yeah, the only thing im running in to is that my other bass has the same string set up, so its like they are competing against each other. But the professor just does what my old bass was trying to do but better. So im going to have to find something new for my old bass. Because if they are both trying to do the same kind of sound the professor will always win.

I also have an olive A and some Evah Pirazzi E & A's sitting in my string drawer that might find their way on the professor just to see how she takes to them. But in the end i will probably wind up back with the spiros. Ive went through this before you see.

So, I'm not much of a joiner, but I met G. Upton in 2000, when he was dealing in basses in his living room acquired from all over the world. He talked me out of buying a Kay, and buying a Mathias Thoma instead. I met him over the border off of Rt 165 to avoid sales tax. To be honest, I was never happy with the setup, even after bringing it back to get rid of a buzz where there was an obvious depression on the fingerboard.

I took it to Zachary Martin, who had to take a hammer and chisel to dislodge the soundpost. But he got it loose, and the sound improved. A few years later, after using it as a drum during a wild gig, I had to bring it back to Zachary to have the top repaired. While the top was off, he trimmed down the 2x4 bracing, and when I got it back, you can't imagine the difference. I haven't yet auditioned a sub-$10,000 bass that comes close. It ain't pretty, but it sure is loud, with a wonderful dark tone.

After a few tries, I've settled on EP on the lower 3 strings, and an Oliv up top. Couldn't be happier.

This probably doesn't qualify me for membership, but I just thought I'd tell my story. I'm glad Gary is making basses in CT. I played one of his hybrids at an open mic the other night, and couldn't wait to get back to mine.

Have to mention I was at the Stonington Upton shop yesterday, and got to see a few of their basses under construction. The new Gary Karr model is REALLY cool, light and sounds fantastic. Unfortunately the reason I was there was that my bass was knocked over at a gig last week (the guy who did it split without even apologizing...GGRRRR), so Eric and Gary are fixing it up.
There are lots of great things in the works there, if you are within a few hours drive it is definitely worth the trip.

^^^...and I was fortunate enough to meet jmp while he was there. It happened to be the very same day in November, 2008 that I was picking up my Concert. Everyone seemed coherent, so the dinner must have been the night after. :)

Thanks for the pics! Funny what they tell me! We were trying to lessen the break angle of the strings over the nut and mounted the G & E pegs high.

I say all the time...but there really isn't a single aspect of our basses that we haven't considered or played with. Every single element has been thought about and messed with in some way or another.

Enjoy your bass!
