Double Bass Upton Bass Club

Hey there.....what is this stuff about being special...???? What about me...????
Just a few words to say how happy I still am with my Upton.....this thing of mine is a real cannon and the tone....oh the tone.....got to go Eric wants us to go practice...

J-M-- I actually sent Russell a pic of your neck. Now I'll put it here. Jean-Marc's neck and mine were carved from the same log. Now, we can all go practice and Eric can go make more basses. :)

If there are any mistakes, please let me know. And for those of you who had them on order, let's see 'em when they arrive!!

I'm going to take mine in to my luthier for a soundpost adjustment tomorrow. It's been so stable the past two years I haven't had to adjust it all, but I'm getting some wolfy tones on the open G. I'm going to miss not having it for a day or so. :( Guess I'll practice electric...

After much research, I put in my order this morning. Just found an instructor. Haven't played a note. What really sold me (besides the great reviews) was the shop of craftsmen. It reminds me a little of the Martin Guitar factory. They're building quality and reputation. Knowing that an instrument is being built for me and will take 12-14 weeks is going to give me a more personal bond than a random stock instrument. I'm hoping that manifests itself as increased interest in practicing.

I took recommendations from Eric (based on what I told him in terms of experience and desired sound) and ended up with:

BG Convert (Gamba), dark chocolate, matte sheen, fingerboard solo extension (just loved the aesthetic), with Spirocore Lights.

Now the wait.
I'm still going to start lessons in January as my instructor also teaches electric and I need some motivation in that department... - j

Monday 9am- Gary's namesake (2006 Flat back professor)bass will be on cbs morning blend in omaha for a trio performance. If you're local check it out. I'll try and post the video from the website after, hopefully we'll get a good sound from the studio.

A video would be cool! Hope the performance went well.

Speaking of videos, here's a couple of practice runs I recorded with my accompanist for the upcoming jury next week. It's on my Upton hybrid, with Alfred Knoll bow.

1. Bach Viola da Gamba sonata in D major, Mvt. 2 Allegro

2. Bach Viola da Gamba sonata in D major, Mvt. 3 Andante

3. Bottesini Elegy in D major

While these are in D for solo tuning, I have orchestral tuning strings, so they're of course in C. This made transposition of the accompaniment parts a pain in the ass, though.

Upton... thanks so much for making such an incredible instrument. Everyone at school is blown away by the tone and playability! I really want a Gary Karr Deluxe now too... :bassist:
