Double Bass Upton Bass Club

Well, I finally pulled the trigger and placed an order for a Concert Bostonian, gamba corners, chocolate finish with figured maple neck! Expect it around Thanksgiving. Will post pics when it arrives. Now for the wait (sigh). Eric and Kate have been great to work with. In the meantime, I can figure out how to sell my Juzek.

Congratulations, sounds like that is going to be a very nice bass.

I'm in!

I have an Upton Standard Superswing. Her name is Blondie. We've been together since March of this year.

I ordered her with; solo extension (for looks mainly), rev solo ll, position markers, and plain guts.

I would have thought that most comments would be about the look (big blonde bass) but I get a lot more comments (compliments actually) about the sound!

Congrats! Now, as we say:
No pictures, no bass! :)

I guess I should apply for admission to this club, as I have two Uptons, but I don't have pics. Sorry about that.

Upton #1 is a Standard plywood that kicks ass in the Hudson Valley, the other bass players all know this bass. But that's playing country-rock, bluegrass and rockabilly.

Upton #2 is a Hybrid that is more tempermental but is my jazz bass in NYC, and has done some gigs in that capacity.

No application required. You're in! For now, that is. There's a 30-day grace period for posting the pix. :D

Initial impression from just a little playing...
Beautiful, deep tone. Much louder than my Juzek.

The color is just what I asked for. The flame maple on the neck is nice (but not as nice as Drurb's ;) )

I like the dual angled endpin block.

Can I have an Upton Bass Club membership number now?

I think his had some tanic acid (black tea wash) before the linseed oil on the neck to bring out the flame. Yours is just straight linseed oil. Take a picture in a year after your hands oil and the acidity of your hands burn the flame in more...it will really stand out!

Enjoy her...I know we did!

Congrats! That bass is gorgeous-- and I really like the flame on the neck. How does the dual-angle end block work. Anyway, enjoy!!!

As for my neck flame...
Black tea wash? Nah... as Eric knows well, the neck on mine was carved from a very special stock of English sycamore. That was one of the special upgrades.

So was mine.

Regarding the dual angle endpin block question:

The special endpin block allows you to use either a straight endpin, or an angled endpin, such as what you'd used with the Rabbath method (ie an Eggpin, or Laborie endpin). It is shown with the standard straight endpin in the picture here. At the large end of the block, there is a hole drilled to fit an an angled enpin.
