Double Bass Upton Bass/Revolution SOLO Bass Pickup?

I found this thing on Upton Bass that has pretty high ratings, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it. It sits in the crevace in the bridge below the adjusters (if you have them).

I have a Rev Solo 1 on my EUB. The current pickup is the RS2 which is supposed to have more output. Mine is a good pickup. Arco sounds great. A little finicky about pressure from the bridge wing, like all piezos, but once I got it in place it has sounded good and not given me any trouble. Any specific questions?

I've got the RS2 on My Plywood Upton Bass.. Everywhere I go people dig my sound. The Pick up has not given me any trouble and is super-simple to install. I leave it on my bass at all times. I do use a fishan pro platimun along with with it. My amp is a Solid state peavey 1-12 I got ata garage sale for $35.. I it the best sounding rig I got for my upright.... Go figure..

When using the rs2 do this:

Set all your levels to 0. N0T 12:00.. then just add what you need. you will be happy.. this is completely different from using a bass guitar. You probably already know that. A little highs - and some lower mids usually doest thetrick

I agree about the finicky part. Too tight/loose or where the pressure is dramatically changes the output/sound

It's a double-edged sword and I've found it to be mostly an advantage. The fact that the pickup can be fitted optimally by shaping the maple case, allows one to get the best results from it for a particular bass. Nothing comes free. It does have to be fitted carefully. Once you find the optimal location in the bridge-wing, a little pencil mark will allow you to quickly return it to that location should it get bumped or removed.

Apparently the RS3 is just around the corner... maybe coming out in 2012? Fits just above the bridge adjuster, more expensive, supposedly better sounding...

Like bluesdragon, I have the RS2 on an Upton Standard. When you find your sweetspot mark it with a pencil. It's quite microphonic and howly as you move it around to find your spot, but once you do it is amazingly quiet and unobtrusive. I do not use a preamp box before the input of my amp head, there is plenty of level. You do want a sensitive eq section on your amp. Takes some time to make settings that work well for both arco and pizz without having to adjust while you're playing.

I recently had to shim mine with a piece of paper between the bridge wing and PU body. Seasonal changes can change the output due to bridge wood shrinkage.

A neat trick is to use a single or, if necessary, a double layer of scotch tape. Works like a charm and easily removable.

Thin strips of balsa work well too. French cheese boxes are a good source if that's your thing.

I like my Rev solo but never tried another on my Upton hybrid, but like most pickup/amps, using it with a propoer preamp, like a Fishman pro platinum EQ, helps a lot.

interesting - it does seem the RS is a bit large in the low end woof factor.

Not too large, in my experience. I have a Rev Solo II on a total POS Palatino upright and I've been very happy with it. Good body sound, warm and thumpy, with enough fingerboard attack to remain articulate. I like it because it still sounds like an upright. A high pass filter, of course, helps immensely. I use Francis Deck's HPF-Pre Series 3.
