Double Bass Upton Bass?

Is Upton Bass a walk-in store in real life? Or is it more like a warehouse?

I need to know today becasue I might have an oppurtunity to go there today, but I need to know soon becasue it would be a 3 hour round trip and I have a hospital appointment later today in the evening.

Are you a real person in real life? If you have the chance to visit Upton, take it, and let us know how it went.

They have a real showroom in Stonington that sits in front and to the side of their large workshop area. Still, I wouldn't make a long drive without calling and making sure that someone will be there to attend to you. It's nothing like a warehouse at all, especially given that every bass is built for a specific customer. There aren't bass shells in storage.

Does anyone here with an Upton have any soundfiles of their particular bass? It would be cool to compile some clips of the plywood, hybrid and carved basses, much like the French gentleman did with the string sound catalog.

Perhaps Upton might consider that as a project? For example...a plywood with Spiro Mittles, Weichs, Obligatos, Evahs, gut, etc. Then the same with their hybrid, then their fully carved bass? How nice would THAT be!!

Just a thought....

I am wondering what's going on with their website... I tried to make a purchase yesterday (a bass bag and a tailgut) but when it got to the part where you choose shipping service, it wasn't giving me any kind of button with which one would continue finalizing the transaction. I wonder if anyone else is having this problem. I guess I will try calling them today to see if I can just make the purchase via telephone. I wish I lived close enough to visit though.....

Eric, I would love to actually HEAR one of the basses you folks make with different string combos. If that is truly on its way, then I, as well as others, will be excited to hear the outcome!

with my Upton deluxe hybrid 2007, opus 113 in March and April of last year at Wild Sound in Minneapolis. Does anybody else have fairly recent recordings they'd link up? Do people want to hear recordings of Upton basses in ensemble? Is this the right place in the forum to do that? Do I need a stinking ID?

I have sound clips in this thread. At the time, the bass had Doms on it and was only days old. The clips contain nothing fancy so that you can hear the tone of the bass on long-ish notes. Not surprisingly, the sound has improved and I now have Evahs on it (I suppose I could add new clips for comparison). I didn't put up any arco clips. I don't really need to because if you bow, for example, the low G to low E it can easily be heard across the country. :) Ok, seriously, the sound is HUGE and window-rattling and could sit well in an orchestra section. FWIW, given I started as a classical player (now converted to jazz), the basses I prefer are usually fully-carved roundbacks with plenty of projection. I got it!
