Is that a third pickup in the center? (and how is it controlled). Also, do you have low/high pass filters with the tone controls?

The thing in the middle is not a third pickup and it is certainly not a thumbrest. Usually it is flush with the body wood, so you would n't be able to rest your thumb on it.

Series I & II basses come with single coil pickups. The thing in the middle is a tuned, adjustable humcanceller.



In the above picture, you may notice 4 holes in a line on the rectangular backplate. The 2 in the center are used to adjust the sensitivity of the humcanceller.

Series I & II basses come with a low pass filter and a Q control for each pickup. On Series I instuments, each Q control is a switch that has three factory preset positions. On Series II instruments, the Q is a dial that is continually adjustable.
