Useless cable

I recently bought an XLR-male-to-jack cable for my Laney DB300H to Ltd D-5. Upon trying it out I got no sound at all, yet my jack-to-jack lead worked fine. A friend of mine (who has alot more audio equipment than I do) confirmed the lead was working fine from testing it with his gear.

The input for the head is a XLR-jack combo so I assumed it would be suitable to use both. Am I wrong here? I don't know a great deal about gear to be honest so any info is appreciated

Just use the Jack to jack standard cable and forget about the XLR. If the XLR is for a balanced cable only it won't work with an unbalanced signal.

I think the XLR in is for something like a Wal or a Rickenbacker 4002 with dedicated XLR out. Usually a pretty low-gain situation that doesn't use a standard pickup, it usually uses low-wind active pickups.

The reason for the combo jack on the amp is so you can connect either an instrument or a mic to the input. For a regular bass, use a regular instrument cable.

Use it to go fishin' in one of the lakes near you. You could also use it to rope yourself to a friend when you go fell walking.
