Useless cable

I recently bought an XLR-male-to-jack cable for my Laney DB300H to Ltd D-5. Upon trying it out I got no sound at all, yet my jack-to-jack lead worked fine. A friend of mine (who has alot more audio equipment than I do) confirmed the lead was working fine from testing it with his gear.

The input for the head is a XLR-jack combo so I assumed it would be suitable to use both. Am I wrong here? I don't know a great deal about gear to be honest so any info is appreciated :D
