Using a BT15 amp head and a 12" speaker-doable?

I've pretty much killed my Crate BT15 (15w, 8" speaker) practice combo (it's farting out on anything over than half volume), and was considering taking the amp head out of it, hooking it up to a 12" speaker I'm going to take out of a PA cabinet, and building a new box for it.

Let's ignore the ohms part (I've got to look and see what the existing speaker is), can someone help me clarify the watts thing? If I'm understand watts right, I can take that 15w head and hook it up to any normal (over 8") speaker and play through it without hurting the speaker. Basically I just won't get the volume like I would with a more powerful head, but it'll still sound at least as loud as the existing 8" and won't hurt the speaker........right?
