Using a slide with Bass?

Hi people's.

I'm getn pretty keen to experiment with a slide.
I am a long time player, just never used a slide before on bass.
(I like flats and passive fenders/stingrays tuned down to C)

So tell me;
When using a slide with bass, is it *better* to use one type over another?
(when I say better, I mean, "better for the fundemental")

I've seen glass, brass, chrome, perspex etc...
What have you guys used? What d'you like?

howdy, I've been playing A TON of slide bass over the last year or so. I've played with practically every type of slide out there and in my opinion a thick bottle neck slide suits me best. Also, flatwound strings have a much better slide sound (to my ears) than round wound. I've never seen much need for a super expensive porcelain or ceramic slide, glass is perfect.

watch your string action, if its too low you'll get a bunch of fret buzz (especially with metal slides) and if its too high your intonation will be all out of whack.

Ever since I saw a video of Chris Wood doing this, I'm really interested. playing Precisions with flats helps, too.

Check out the late, great Mark Sandman of Morphine. I believe he played exclusively with a slide, or at least most of the Morphine stuff.

Roger Waters used to play slide on bass with echo effects in the 70s. It was more of a sound effect than playing music.

yes he did.

Mark has been my primary inspiration for playing slide. He used mainly a 2 string custom bass, tuned D and A. He tuned a standard A string up to D and a G string to A. Some tunes are C, G and a few are octave A's.
