Using sansamp BBDI AND Mackie DI box

Got a question… I’ve been in this setup for years regarding my pedalboard for my live setup…. Amp—- sansamp—-distortion pedal—- wah (loop switch ) compressor—- tuner—-bass….

I normally use the sansamp to boost my tone for the amp and use the XLR out to the mixer….

Now during practice I forgot my sansamp and my drummer had a mackie mdb-p1 passive di box…. Now while I love my sans amp sound into my amp… I loved the growl of the mackie in the mixer…

the question: is it possible to use both at same time? If so, how do I set this up on my board to keep both? I know this might be an effects question but wanted to see everyone’s thoughts on here.

I use the Sansamp XLR out to FOH and use the sculpted tone into the amp too… but seeing how the mackie sounded at practice in the mixer was monster… just wanted to see if there was a way to keep my stage tone with the sansamp and use the mackie as FOH… someone mentioned using the parallel output… how would that work?

Just use the loop out on the Mackie DI to send to the Sansamp.

We have a dual-channel setup at my church with the SansAmp BDDI (v.2) for effected signal and the Radial J48 for clean signal.

The bass plugs into the SA and out to the main board via XLR as the main channel. I run the 1/4" out (effected) to the amp as a stage monitor.

Meanwhile, the SA is connected to the J48 via parallel out (dry signal), and the XLR out from the J48 to the main board as a separate channel. It's up to the sound tech to blend the two channels as he sees fit for the FOH.

The Sansamp is probably sucking out your mids where the "growl" lives and the direct box is sending a full range, natural signal.

This. Try backing off the Blend on the Sansamp to 50% or less and see if you get some of that same feeling as using the Mackie.

Bass-whatever pedal chain-mackie-sansamp-amp.
Use the Mackie XLR to the board, and the Thru to the Sansamp input and on with the rest of your chain.

Yes, the blend knob is key! I never had mine set above the halfway mark. There is no mid control on my old Sansamp pedal. Tech 21 recommended reducing the highs and lows to emphasize the mids better.

passive direct boxes shouldn't have any "growl"

you're just discovering that you like the tone with the sansamp bypassed is all

the question: is it possible to use both at same time?

if you just roll back the blend on the sansamp, that brings in a dry unprocessed sound to mix with the sansamp tone at the same time and sort of gets you there except the sansamp EQ controls are still active

in the big picture though, if you're discovering that you like the sound without a certain pedal then there's a good argument for not using that pedal anymore! at the very least maybe re-evaluate how you have the sansamp set up, maybe adjust it to be somewhat closer to its bypassed sound

(i love my sansamp BDDI and VTDI but i use them more as intended, where i don't have an actual bass amp and the sansamp goes straight to the PA and straight to a power amp for my cabs to recreate an "amp tone". if you also have a bass amp then it might be redundant)
