That control setup is my LEAST favorite thing about my Ric. Any change in volume =change in tone as the balance changes. I've settled on MV/Blend/Master Tone as the most practical and useful for two pup basses. Not a deal breaker, as I tend to figure out a good general setting and then leave it, but unnecessarily complex IMO.

I have a G&L L-2000 w a switch and VTT I am modding it so that neck is always 100% and the knob will just attenuate the bridge.
Right now the switch is a 2way instead of a 3way and it goes from neck to neck/bridge I never solo the bridge. So if you dont like the switch bury it that's what i am planning to do if my experiment works i will have one master volume and the bridge will replace the bass pot which will just get buried in the body

2 pup are V T & 3-way switch
My Dean Stylus is VT & 3-way switch semi-hollow

I want all of those, but mostly the Les Paul Bass and the Gretsch Thunder Jet

The bass in question is a Samick Saturn bass. P and J pickups. Was active when new, now passive. Found it in a pawn shop, working.
When it was new, I believe it was wired V,V, bass, treble.
My question is this, the volume, volume, tone, tone setup allows for the choice of pickup sound sent to the amp and how much of each pickup gets sent. The three way switch does that too, but just front, both, back.
Why is the switch there?
Seems to me that the switch was installed by the Department of Redundancy Department.

Thoughts?

I have a theory on why an earlier owner of your Samick Saturn bass configured it this way. There is a pickup loading effect that occurs when you have two pickups wired in the standard VVT configuration. It actually dulls the treble a bit and might even decrease the overall gain. The 3-way pickup selector switch isolates the pickups from each other and eliminates the above loading effect. I have a Warmoth parts PJ that was originally wired with the standard VVT configuration that I modified to a 3-way pickup selector with a master volume/master tone set-up. It wasn't a night & day difference, but it did noticeably make the bass a bit more "live" sounding. The primary disadvantage to this configuration is that it only allows the neck pickup alone, the bridge pickup alone, or both pickups together but with no variable mixing of the pickups. The configuration on your Samick Saturn bass allows for the best of both worlds by eliminating the loading effect of two pickups wired VVT yet retaining the ability to variably mix the two pickups.

Treble/bass on the stack knobs … the other two are volume for each pickup. Wait you say it’s just one pickup. Actually it is a 4 coil split into two separate and discrete pickups. Well how are you going to get much variation of sound on that, each coil bank has its own separate preamp.
