V4B disappointment

In the 70s I played a precision through a V4B with an 8x10 cab. I liked it better than any rig before or since. I happened to be in a GC today to get some DR Fat Beams and saw they had a new V4B with a 4x10 cab on the floor. I grabbed a P and plugged in expecting to be pleasently impressed with it.
Not. It was flat and toneless. I used to run all the EQ straight up, but not with this one. I spent time trying to get a tone I like and never did. Even with the rocker switch set for ultra hi and treble cranked up, there were no highs. The bottom was mediocre.
So is this what the new V4B is about or do I need to A. Get my hearing checked or B. I happened upon a dud?

This is like a serious fantasy killer.

Let me point out;
1) You used an unknown set up and strung bass.
2) It was not hooked up to the same cab as you used to play.
3) Human memory is not the most reliable thing.

If you want to get a feel for it, you at the very least need your bass, not one off the wall. Did they have an 810 to hook up to?

which cab was it hooked up to? was it hooked up to the correct ohm rating?

Im with B-String on this one. Youre probably the only person that hasnt liked the V4B with regards to tone that ive heard yet.

Not sayin the amp ids for everyone, but you should be able to get a VERY broad amount of tones out of the head with an efficient cab. The tone circuit ids very straight forward and responsive.

I have an ol' V4B, '74. I havent found an amp that i like better for live gigs. Everything from 50's tunes to new rock, that amp can handle ewith the 212AV ive got with it.

Yeah I'm with B and Wellen. Take your bass in there and try other cabs. You should be able to get anything from pillow fat to ice pick from that amp (and everything in between).

I play through both. I own the new V4B and play through my guitarists old V4 in his rehearsal space and they sound identical. The reissue actually has more bottom end because I usually have to cut it. I do need to EQ a little more mids at 800 hz in the reissue to keep up with the vintage at 1000 hz but not much. Same bass, same cab, etc. My V4B is probably my favorite amp at the moment.
