Yes, see the youtube video posted earlier, it is part of the "preride" - the part where they entertain you while waiting for the actual ride. The band appears in the control room window - its a tv screen in reality - and invites you to follow along to the gig across town. Better hurry, so you get on the Rock'nRoller Coaster.
Cost wise, it's peanuts to Disney.
Nice. My kids had a blast looking for hidden Mickeys when they were younger. Me, too.
All props behind glass. They'll never be played. They are on display at the beginning of a roller coaster ride.
That exhibit debuted at the world's fair in 1964/65. Disney probably got it for relative chump change.
GE probably spent a lot of money building that thing intending to use it for a few months, and Disney asks them if they can have it and continue to run it. Sure, why not - more advertising for GE, you know Disney will do a great job of upkeep, and Disney gets an attraction that they don't have to build - not sure that's exactly how it went down, but I can't see how it wasn't a win for both companies.
Oh man, that brings back memories, coincidentally enough of playing Rev X at an arcade under the Disneyland hotel, pre-downtown Disney!

To me, the only really mind boggling part is the Gobo between the bass stack and drum set.
This added cost only makes the display uglier, and obscures the view of all the rock and roll goodies.
I bet some live band Karaoke thing is going to happen here at some point.

Disney takes their line waiting time very seriously; like value added entertainment...
Like that Indiana Jones ride line. HOLY COW it's a whole ride in itself.
