Vail Johnson

Really? :eyebrow:

For what it's worth, his live show is far different than listening to one of his records. The band is killin' and their sound crew know how to mix a live show! Best I've ever heard! I'd guarantee you'd want to play with that band! One of the best I've heard!

You mean, really different, kinda like this?:D

I saw that amp weight thread but didn't check it out until I it got to 6 pages. I clicked and they were talking about Yanni's bass player. I kind of imagined it going like this:

How much should an amp weigh?

shuttle club: 6 lbs
SVT club: 80 lbs
Old fart: Do a search noob!
Markbass club: 5.2 lbs
Aguilar club: 60 lbs
P&W club: Pray about it.
JimmyM: Toooooooooooooooooooooooobs!
Kjung: I’ve tried several and currently my favorite is 4.9 lbs, but McDonalds has a new 1/4 pounder out that I’ve got on order. If the mids are centered at 742.8 khz I think I’ll like it but I’ve heard their at 741.6. It might still meet my tonal needs. When it gets here I’ll post clips. IMO, YMMV, IME, IMHE, AFIAK, ***
Munji: Have you noticed Oprah has put on a few pounds?
Greenboy: Weight per watt is dependent on the cosine of the harmonic coeffiecient tuned to A 440 divided by blah blah blah...
Dr. Cheese: Why are all these amps black?
Maki: Did somebody mention Asian chicks?
Big Ol Harry: You're all worthless and weak!
Bill Fitzmaurice: It’s not weight it’s xmax. xmax I tell you. xmax!!!
Tom Bowlus: Just get one of each.

Boy did I get that one wrong.

I needed that!:D

 This has what to do with my comment?

Can we not resort to juvenile responses and trolling?

Ah! I guess we don't share the same sense of humor or imagination. No harm in that at all.;)

In case you didn't notice, it's the same Louis Armstrong tune that Kenny assaulted and made millions of dollars with, only this time messed with by some kid with a computer and a wild imagination, making no money.

Both versions are far different than listening to Mr. Armstrong live. Do you think Louis would be rolling in his grave over one of these versions more than the other? :D

I'm sure Kenny G is different sounding live than on one of his studio recordings. Your comment was right.

Kenny G is a house hold name. Ask the average guy to name a sax player and most likely
that is the only name he would know.
I wonder what Vail uses for an amp?
gk 700rb's with four 410's, i do believe. i'll find out next sunday night for sure. that's right...mrs. devo jb and i will be rockin' the g! that's what happens when you're nice to people ;)

anyway, i must admit to not being a fan of people taking old recordings and cutting new tracks on them, but i think pat metheny was out of line going so nuts about it. so many people take old recordings and cut new tracks on them nowadays that it's hardly that "sinful" anymore. and it brought a great old song in front of a new audience that never heard it, and that ain't so bad. as long as the correct people got paid, what do i care?

It's talk bass. It wouldn't be no other way.

Don't blame the messenger. Anyone coming out with remarks and reactions like Vail's in that thread in a conversation held in person would attract the same reaction.

People can't have it both ways- this is a public forum with a large and varied sample many countries' populations. The upside is anyone posting can reach thousands of people instantly, the downside (if you choose to see it as a downside) is that many of those people will have reactions and the desire to express them, and they may or may not know what the poster's qualifications are. Some gain respect by their postings, some by their career and life achievements and the fame garnered this way, just as some garner ridicule and approbation. This is often unfair, and undeserved praise and ridicule are part and parcel of this.

I'll take this any day over a rigid and hierarchical system where respect and obedience is automatically accorded the powerful and the successful.

Hey, I know it must be crappy to have spent a lifetime developing skills, knowledge, and experience, and to have an honest desire to share these same, and then have some little wet-behind-the-ears punk question one's information or motives, but if that person can't accept this will happen then they have no place on a forum like this, and shouldn't be surprised when the inevitable happens.

How much of what we all do here is down to ego and vanity, and how much is due to an unselfish desire to share knowledge? if we looked inside ourselves honestly there are few of us who could say there wasn't a bit of vanity and desire to be heard and respected mixed in with our desire to share.

That's right, Pat went over in print, he seems pretty high strung and anal retentive. Vail went over too, he said something stoopid like he was gonna twist Pat's arm or something like that, pretty juvenile actually.

Like I said it's talk bass and it wouldn't be no other way.

Whether some felt that Vail was being a jerk or not, it still comes down to a lynch mob mentality. I think some kats just have a attitude toward some players who they feel have achieved things that they feel they themselves should have had or should be having. Jealousy can really be an enabler.

I read Vails comment's and they were his comments. If he felt that D-class amps are crap so what. That's his opinion. There are members here on tb that are really not even known out side of tb. And all they do on tb is go around with a similar attitude as some felt Vail had. But the lynch mob doesn't come out looking for a hanging. Some of these same tb members continuously disrespect other members and do it with immunity.

So some one like Vail or Jeff Berlin come along and say something about an amp or music education and it becomes so wrong. And the tb lynch mob get's even more enraged when these players start defending themselves. What's even more interesting the butt kissing that goes on when some of these same tb members meet these players and their all over them like girls at a Vitoria Secret super sale.

Hiding behind a screen name talking bs is a b&%# move to say the least.

wouldn't quite say immunity. i've seen them get bounced a time or 5. i personally have been bounced several times and will probably get bounced again in the future. i'm trying to be nicer in my old age, but someone's gotta set these young punks straight ;)

vail's problem when he said his stuff in that thread is that he didn't use smileys. nobody can get mad if you use a smiley. you can say the most outrageous stuff ever, and if you add a :D or ;) , you're in the clear. see? i just called all young people punks, yet nothing will happen because with a smiley, all is forgiven, all wrongs reversed, all rights reserved.

And all trolling posts are instantly forgiven if accompanied by a :hiding:

These new lightweight prefabricated smileys are all crap, and I tried them all. There's not even a little sun with rays around it drawing to dot my i's with, but you women will never understand this. If you don't like my smiley face I will punch you. :^)

:D That's a classic! Excellent!

On a more serious note, it continues to amaze me that some would think being a good player and knowing about/being interested in the gear side of things are related in any way. Totally different skills.

What gets some 'pros' in trouble on this site on occasion is believing that if they know something about one thing, then the know something about all things:smug::D:hiding:

I just think what got some people in trouble in said thread is that they didn't seem to see that all he was doing was state an opinion.
They just took it all wwaayy too serious.
And that's just the gear side of it.
Quite petty I think to get upset just because some guy voices an opinion.blanket or not.

And all that "personal stuff" just got out of hand.
No idea why that thread was kept open as long as it was.
Much could have been avoided...
My 2¢ :)

And I still don't get why this present thread was needed...

Gotcha!

On another note, Louis Armstrong did not write that song. He just performed it. Still, Kenny had to have permission to make the recording. So why folks put all the 'blame' on him, I don't get! In addition, it's a Pop song! Not a Jazz song! So why do folks feel it's such an 'untouchable' song? I didn't have a problem with it and I thought it was cool! Did Natalie Cole get the same flack for doing the same thing with her Father's tune?

I don't know, I just think folks with these type of issues really need to get a life! We all have one life to live and we waste it worrying about the 'other' man!

Yes the smiley :) You got me :)

Time to get reacquainted with your Buddy.
These certainly don't seem to be "in jest".

Well, that's entirely possible. We have ALL aged considerably since our days in school in Missouri. Since I relocated to the West Coast from KC I haven't had the time to keep in touch that I would like :crying:

Still - I refuse to believe that either Pat or Mike would actually "do anything" to Kenny. And, as much as I appreciate his bodyguard Vail, I'm sure that Kenny doesn't need protection. We're not kids anymore kicking the snot out of each other on a Friday night....;)
