Whole bunch of movie threads today, so I figured I'd join in too.

Brother was home, so we went to see a movie tonight. We both wanted to see Valkyrie considering it's supposed to be Tom Cruise's first good since the Last Samurai or whatever. I like most of his work actually, just not his personal life, but that's another story.

Down to the movie: for those who don't know, it's a German Colonel plotting to kill Hitler to take over Germany and make peace with the world. It seems very noble and the realization that some Nazis realized that Hitler was not leading Germany to glory and decided to take action before the rest of Europe was destroyed.

I thought the acting was great, the story was great, and most of the movie was overall very good. At first, the movie started off in German with English subtitles, so I was irked at first. As soon as I got used to the subtitles, the movie seamlessly switched to English and I never actually noticed the transition. Very smooth.

Great movie, I'd recommend for anyone. It's not bloody, it's not boring, it's got some action but not much. Little bit of love thrown in, but overall, I'd classify Valkyrie as a great drama that's somewhat inspiring to take action and to the right thing in the face of evil.

I'd give the movie 4/5 jumpy dudes.

"Distractingly bad" was one comment. Basically, they say he just didn't fit the role.

I will still try to see it. I don't take critics reviews into account anyway.

Of course, I've just seen the trailers all over the History Channel and stuff- it looks good to me, and it looks like Cruise is a good fit for the character. I'm not a Cruise fan, and I think a LOT of people would have to suspend their feelings for Cruise for him to not be "distractingly bad." Which is a shame. It's a great story.

Another related story that would be great would be the Japanese army officers who tried kidnapping the emperor and tried to keep the war going...

I don't think he was a bad fit at all. No real Cruise-isms to distract you. I think it was a well done role by him.

havent' seen the film yet, but i'll go see it when it comes out. Claus von Stauffenberg is a historical figure i look up to.

one thing i'd like to put right, and that's why i quoted your post, is that people have the misconception about the plotters that they planned to change germany fundamentally. this is wrong, the plan was to replace some people in the hierarchy and get rid of some government agencies like the gestapo. the killing of the jews for example wasn't much of an issue, their anger towards hitler stemmed from his dubious tactis as chief of army and the 'unnecessary deaths' of german soldiers that ensued. it is a know fact that for some the doings of the SS behind the frontlines played a major part in the motivation for the attempted coup, like Hennning von Tresckow ( the real hero of the story imo).
essentially, the plan was to get the US on germany's side to unify forces against stalin.

wow... imagine how different the world would be if it had succeeded, and we did ally the germans and fight the russians... hm...

I haven't seen it, I'll probably download it if I want to see it. I just can't see myself paying to see a movie with Tom Cruse in it, while he wears an eye patch the whole time. Sorry, can't take that serious. Although I really liked him in Tropical Thunder, although it took me half of the movie to figure out that it was him.
