As you know I used to work with Yngwie Malmsteen, I also helped design some effects pedals and other stuff for companies over the years.

Since this is a forum for Bass players ........ What tips can you give for getting that Clanky, Clanky Steve Harris Iron Maiden bass sound ?
To my "non-Bass" ears, it almost sounds like he is "typewriter tapping" the strings and banging the strings on the neck as opposed to the pulling upwards finger plucking technique most bass player seem to use.
Also sounds like the low end is cut off around 60 hz and lower to tighten it up and eliminate the rumble rumble low end of many bass tones.
Also seems like some EQ boost around 3K to enhance that clank-clank-clank sound
Can you guys enlighten me ?

p pickup bright roundwounds(steve has his own strings i believe. jack up your mids and attack the everloving hell out of it. its all about bright rounds and pummeling the strings
Which are Rotosound flatwounds, in a heavy guage, low action, typewriter style attack. Thats a lot of it.

Yeah, I should expand on that part more, sorry.
Roto flats, when new, sound really, really bright, brighter than rounds, super clanky, and Steve puts on a new set before every show.
That combined with the low action, typewriter attack(he puts vaseline on his fingers to help with this) drumming the strings rather than plucking, makes that sweet sound.

Exactly, think of drumming your fingers on a table, lightly, thats how he's able to get it so fast.
Its odd, everything seems wrong about his technique and setup, but it works.
I'll have to watch a LIVE concert DVD of them and pay more attention.
I had not listened to Iron Maiden in years, but after pulling out some old CDs for a drive the other day, I remembered how good they were and how much l liked that Bass Sound.

I think in general there would be easier ways to get a similar (but probably not identical) tone... throwing a new set of Rotosound flats on before every gig is gonna be a bit cost prohibitive, methinks. I've heard folks on here say they've copped a decent Maiden tone playing a P bass pickstyle with stainless strings (such as Rotosound Swing 66) and messing around with your EQ. I bet the frequencies you mention would be a good starting place.

Yes, sadly I may have to try this "pick emulation" idea to get his Bass Sound.. and all bass playing in general from now on whenever I play bass
(remember I'm really a guitar guy playing wise)
As mentioned in an earlier post, after tearing ligaments off the back of my hand on several fingers some time back, I have to be careful about accidently "snagging" those fingers to be safe.
Just a few minutes of fingering causes me to feel where the healing was never 100% successful ... So it is wiser for me to stay with a pick all the time (ugghhh)
Good thing I did not want to be a bass player as a profession - or that injury would have ruined me for good.
For the styles of music I record...
I like the Geezer Butler / Black Sabbath "rumble" bass sound for heavy dirge songs
And as you may have figured out by my request for advice, I like the tighter, less bass heavy Steve Harris bass sound for fast tempo songs.
More of a dat--dat---dat instead of a glub - glub- glub

Frudua models will be a bit higher than Tuscany / Exlusive.
Also the Bass Amps will be upscale.... think along the lines of some of the more rare and elite bass amp designs.
In Europe where they are just now debuting, people are remarking how they KILL most other common bass amps they have on display.
That's all I have on those new products so far.
More to follow.

TUSCANY is the "relics" product line.
You will see these are patterned after many classic models with some modern upgrades.
A step above MIM Fenders, Epiphones, Agiles, etc.....
Specific to Bass Players, currently all the Tuscany Basses are 4 string models.
EXLUSIVE is a more unique range of guitars and basses.
The guitars offer the specs for various legendary signature model instruments but at better pricing.
The Basses in thr Exlusive family are the unique 5 string basses unlike anything else on the market.
The FRUDUA brand is one more step up the ladder in craftsmanship and detail (and price) and are patterned after some of the more popular hand-built instruments Italian Luthier Galeazzo Frudua has offered in Italy for around 20 years now.

The bass that I have here is the Fusion. The other two stayed behind! I would love to play the Super-B more. Maybe the next round of videos, we will remember to get some slapping and pick stuff on that one too. I think they are both VERY nice basses. Ideally, and I do not work for mike, a guy could justify having one of each. They are that different.
I hope the videos gave you guys a closer look at the basses, and at least a taste of what they can sound like. They all played very well. Like I said before, it was really tough picking which of the 5s I wanted to bring home to play with, long term. Should have twisted Mike's arm for both!

Feel free to ask me anything about the basses. I am brutally honest, and have zero financial interest in the sales end of this line. That said, I think Mike is a good guy, and want him to do well. All I am saying is I that my wallet is not helped by the sales of these instruments. As such, I am more honest than say a GC salesguy....
