They feel quite similar to me, though my only experience with the Garbo was a very brief session on an Eminence bass. I think that the Animas are a bit brighter. I like them both, but the lack of arco response in the Garbos makes the Animas the choice for me.

Hey Guys,
Brought my bass to my main man Jeff Bollbach today to have the nut and bridge widened for my new strings (Velvet Animas). Anyway, it sounds friggin' awesome! The bass sings and projects very well with them. Jeff was equally impressed. They also sound great with the bow, if you like the gritty PC type sound.
Anyway, thanks for all your recommendations and input!

ok I maybe stupid but here it goes
2 questions about installing velvets 180's
1) does the color winding red,blue green black goes in the bottom?
2)if the metal winding can not go into the machine do you have to make a huge whole in the machine for the thicker part?
I have never seen stuff like that.

Now God @#$@ it, I am so tired of this. I take all the precautions (nut width, graphite on bridge and nut wind on slow...) but these bleeding strings keep breaking on me. I've broken E's A's and G's now, Compas, and Animas. I write to Schertler to complain, do I get a new string once in a while? I don't even get my emails returned. I love these strings, but I just cant afford this #$%@#. If I dont buy back ups I end up like today taking the whole set off until I can get the string replaced. Who can afford to use $250 per set strings and then they snap (at the bridge at the nut...) How am i ever going to afford that new Focus III with these strings breaking like this?

Where did you order your strings from? Direct from the dealer in Switzerland, they come with an, albeit vaigue, instruction 'manual'. The metal winding should not go into the machine heads. unfortunately i'm no longer in the same country as the instructions, but loads of people use the compas 180s, im sure someone has a copy...

I've had a set of Animas on my bass for almost 2 years now. The set on my teacher's Kay have been on for at least a year, the one's on his A bass have been on about the same amount of time. I play with pretty high action and do a majority of my gigs without an amp, so it's not like I'm babying them. One string I would say could possibly be flawed, but if you are consistently breaking strings it sounds like something else is going on.
I can't see your profile from posting, where you at again? How are you getting the strings? Is it possible that something is happening in shipping/handling or in the way they are storing the strings at the joint you're buying them? If they are getting a bad crimp somewhere along the supply chain, that might be your problem...

...or something on your bass is doing it to them. Sharp edges and/or sharp angles at the bridge and/or nut.
I just installed a set of Animas today after not having used Velvets since 2000, and I suddenly recalled the difficulty I had then: if you have a long string length (mine's 42.75" which isn't even all that long), the strings are almost too short to use. The red wrap at the top hangs over the nut almost into first position, but then as they stretch and you keep tuning them up the wrap gets back to the nut. The only problem is, there's this bulge in the wrap right above where the winding starts, and by the time it gets to the nut the string is too tight for it to slip over and you end up stretching the string above this "roadblock." I can see how this would definitely cause breakage if not handled carefully: I had to loosen the strings up again and put a piece of thin cardboard (from a box of dishwasher detergent, the shiny stuff) over the nut and under the strings and then play the bass for an hour or so, constantly retuning as the strings stretched. After they stretched to the point where the bulges were over the bridge, I took the cardboard out (which meant re-loosening the strings) and then re-tightened them, yanking on the bulge part like a mofo until it slipped over the nut and could slide freely.
This is a big pain in the butt, and if they break anyway it's quite expensive. But these strings sound and feel very very very very nice...

Interestingly, just yesterday a thread started on the 2xbasslist about this and three guys all mentioned that they have broken 180s.

Well I'm thinking post velvets now. I have not tried the Obligatos and I have not tried some of the other steel on gut strings. I think that the velvets might be a hard match for this new pick up, unless I want to jack up the action into bow and arrow country (too much clicking and clacking) athough I love all those sounds when I hear Reed Anderson with the Bad +.

On the top strings - definitely Olivs. They can't be beat. On the bottom, perhaps Eudoxas (expensive) or Permanents, Dominants (apparently could also be prone to breakage), or Helicore Hybrid heavy gauge.
At Ed's suggestion I bought Animas at least a year ago, maybe more. I've switched them back and forth on three basses with different string lengths. No problems at all. I start winding with alot of slack so I get as many wraps around the axle as possible.Ed Fuqua said:

I've had Garbos on mine for the past few months and have treated them fairly roughly (slapping, etc.) without a problem. And like Don said, every URB player who's heard the bass has commented on how great the strings sound. I think it's very much worth it to have your bass looked at to see if it's not an issue with the bridge or nut.
Got Animas about 3 weeks ago & I'm also getting these nasty green stains. I don't like them! I've been using rubbing alcohol to clean the strings. Any other suggestions? Anyone know how to get rid of the stains? They don't seem to wash off easily...
