Double Bass Velvet Garbos double bass strings megathread part I

I've had the same set of animas for about 9 months, I've played them a lot and have had no problems. Before using velvets I was pretty much a tomastic guy so I'm used to a long life string, which the animas are turning out to be.
The only thing which seems to be happening is that the strings are mellowing, no loss of volumn (or not a lot) but the strings are not as ringing as they were, which to me is better. I'm happier with the strings now then I was at first.

This describes exactly the problems I'm having, on both strings. Huh. I wrote to Velvet but haven't heard back yet; it's kind of a drag, since I'm going back into the studio tonight and I don't know how that buzz is going to come across when I'm under the microscope.
The strings are great, though; I'm willing to deal with a little hassle for the sound.

I had a set on my bass for at least 2 and a half years, the only reason I changed them was because I had some work done and got a new bridge. The set that's on my teacher's Kay (one of the studio basses) is at least 3 yeasr old and has been on two other basses.

i'm interested in trying some velvets.
i want a big open sound but i don't want anything too bright, maybe more thumpy. should i check out some 180's or some anima's. those are the two i'm thinking about now but i haven't searched the archives much yet.

are all the velvet strings constructed the same, is it silk wrapped in some types of metal.

does the 180 make a nice pizz. string?

Man, that's a big bass. I don't think the Animas are going to fit! My string length is 42.5" and when I first installed the Animas the red wrapping at the top of the string extended over the nut well into half position. I initially freaked out about this, but as the strings stretched out the wrapping gradually crept up above the nut until now, when it's where it's supposed to be (but still only like one centimeter above the nut).

But I suppose it also depends upon how much afterlength you have below the bridge. Do "normal" strings work on your bass, like Spirocores or Flexocors?

i had an Anima D break on the winding in the pegbox. Hit the pianist/ singer in the back of her head. Could have been funny except for the fact that she is my wife.

Note: do not try to break in a new Anima on the gig cuz they stretch for days. Play them in on off days and save them for when needed.

Pirastro spirocores? Pirastro makes Flexocors and Thomastic makes Spirocores. FYI,FWIW...

well its a good thing ken jumped on you, i assumed you were talking about spirocores and just mistakenly said pirastro instead of thomastik....flexocore and spirocore.....as far as sound i think thats about as close to one extreme to the other as it gets.

Sorry, FRED, lost this for a minnit. The G has gotten a little "buzzy" but I think that's more due to the bend over the bridge being in 3 different places on each bass. They still sound warm, still project acoustically over a quartet with a drummer who ain't shy about throwing down (albeit in a musical way), still sound like the bass I hear in my head. The ones I had on MY bass (for a little over two years) to all intents and purposes still sounded like the set that just got put on when I had the work done. the new strings had a "piano ish" quality to them that dissipates over time and use.
