Double Bass Velvet Garbos double bass strings megathread part I

I have been using my Anima G for about a month now and love it. I was using Oliv's on G and D. I wanted a little clearer pizz tone and it seems to have worked. When i switched the AnimaG for the Oliv i also switched the D for an Obligato. It broke (as they all do for for some reaason). Actually they don't break...the windings come unraveled. I have played other guys basses who use Obligatos and theirs has done this as well and they don't seem to care or notice. I feel that when this happens the "rolling" effect is maginfied....anyway thhat is another thread. So now I am using Anima G, Dominant solo D, and Helicore on E and A. So far...it works.
I like the Anima G so much that I bought the D from Lou Roten. If you are used to Oliv's...the feel pizz wise is similiar and it does give a clearer tone IMO. I do prefere the oliv's arco response however.

in their setup. You sound like you're another step in the direction of steel than me. I love the Oliv G but the D is not clear enough. The Anima D is perhaps a little more "wirey" than I'd ideally like, but it still has some gut-like character and is nice and clear all the way up the neck. Also, I find the Oliv D harder to bow than the Oliv G or the Anima D. I like the Pizzicato E&A but they're not much good for arco, so I use Superflexible which is a good, reliable steel string. These things can really vary depending on your bass and your personal taste.BTW, isn't Lou Roten the US rep for Velvet and Schertler?

Once I get the Anima D separate, I plan on trying out all of the Oliv/Anima combinations (on G and D). I love Oliv's. I think the Anima's were calling to me to try them. I like them as well but the arco thing is killing my practice time. The Anima's are listed as an "Arco" string but I don't think you could do much with these things with the bow. they would really stand out in a bass section as well. The pizz is fat and deep though.

I'm at the last day of a long 5 day gig stretch. Usually by now my hands are pretty raw. They feel pretty good right now. I like these strings more and more as I get used to them. The low tension thing was weird at first but for my mitts it works out better. I just have to remember to stay light on them. If I dig in hard they kill me and they don't give up more sound when I do.
I have a set of Labella Guts on an old Kay here and they have a very similar tension. Not to far off on the sound either but the Animas nod more towards the Spirocore thing. A nice departure really. I couldn't play with Guts all night on half the gigs I play.

Yes, right now I have an Oliv G and an Anima D on my bass. I have an Oliv D but actually find that harder to bow than the Anima. I had a full set of Animas a few years ago ( I think they had a gut core then) when I was just beginning to study arco and found them very difficult to bow. The D I have now is a new string and I'm able to bow on it fairly well. It seems to blend well with the Oliv G and Superflex E&A. The arco tone of the Oliv D is also different - it's a bit more "hollow" sounding, less "grainy".
I'm curious to try another full set of Animas (spending more money :scowl: ) and see how I like them again.
My current setup is really just one big compromise. I've got an endless dilemma -- I live in Nashville and most of my upright gigs and sessions are for swing, blues, bluegrass, Elvis and Patsy Cline impersonators, etc. It's mostly stuff that a gut set-up is best for. But at home I work a lot on arco and jazz. Plain gut Ds never give me clear pitch above around an A, and I don't like bowing on a plain gut D or G. My favorite E&A for pizz are Pizzicatos, but they suck for arco. Superflex is OK for arco (but nothing like Flexicor), a little metallic for pizz. Also, some gigs I do are pretty loud. I find gut is much better for loud gigs, they have less ringing overtones and feedback less than steel. I can really turn it up with gut and an an Underwood pickup. But then I can't come home and practice arco the next day.

I saw a concert this weekend and spoke with the bass player afterward about the G and D strings on the bass. She said they were Velvets, and thought they were Animas but couldn't swear they weren't Garbos. The G string seemed to be gut or have a gut-like covering--definitely not metal wrapped. The D string was round wound in silver metal, and was about the same thickness as the G. Both had yellow loops at the tailpiece, and what looked like light green thread at the pegbox. The sound was thumpy and gutlike. They were paired with LaBella Deep Talkin' strings on the A and E. It was a good match, both in terms of tension (low) and sound.
Any guesses--Animas or Garbos?

Definitely Garbos. Animas have a red patch at the pegbox, Garbos have a green one. Plus, the Garbos do look like guts, and the G and D are practically the same diameter (as I learned to my chagrin when installing them incorrectly one day).
I just put on a new Anima D I bought from Lou Roten. So now I have Anima G and D (Steel E and A). Nice string! I like the D better than the G as far as an overall string. It bows easier and doesn't sound as "gut like" when it is bowed. The tension is very similiar to Oliv D so I can see why you can go back and forth between Olivs and Anima. To me, Animas sound a little more "modern" than Olivs. A brighter sound. I have used Oliv's for the past 4-5 years and nevery had a problem with windings. I hope I can say the same aout Animas. I do notice that my tail piece as it hits the bass near the end pin is leaning a little towards the E and A string (due to more tension). Any thoughts? I assume this is normal whenever you split sets beit Gut, Anima, or any lesser tension string with Steel E and A. I must admit...I never noticed it with the Oliv's...but don't know if I was looking as hard.
I went to my lesson today (just when I think I'm getting fairly decent, my teacher just blows me away with stuff) anyway, he tried my bass with the Animas on it. When he's done he just smiles and says "I'm getting a set of those".

I know that there's been discussion about this on other threads, but can you folks chime in with your opinions about bowing on Animas? Do you find all the strings to be about the same, or are the lower or higher strings any better or worse for arco? Do you like tone, etc.? I currently have an Anima D on my bass and find it not too bad arco-wise, great for pizz. I'm considering getting a whole set. All comments appreciated.

Well I find them easier to bow than the LaBella 7710's.

I like the sound but I have a hard time bowing them--they tend to produce (or did lasdt time I worked at it) a lot of wild overtones I had a hard time controling. But I'm awful with the bow

With my novice skills I had a hard time in the beginning. Very scratchy with the G. Then I dunno what, something happened overnight after using them for several months.. Now it's not all that scratchy anymore and sounds pretty good. Me likey.
I have black hair on my bow so it's pretty "grippy" since I can't think of a better term right now. Has that sort of sound.
