It is ridiculous to suggest that Verdine didn't actually play on EW&F albums. Verdine was a bassist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has the chops. If he believes his dancing entertains the audience more, I have no problem with it.
My opinion as of now is: He composed brilliant basslines and can groove like hell, but from all of the videos in this thread it seems that he lacks any ability to improvise and his age has taken it's toll on his ability to perform live.
I take it nobody even watched that vid I posted. Well let me break it down for you...
Verdine still smokes it. Just because he wasn't playing great in that old video doesn't mean he can't still smoke it.

It doesn't matter. If you are going to gig and have an instrument strapped to you, either play it or put it down. He should be a dancer if he's not playing. There's no reason to be a fake.

Verdine White is a bass player and a entertainer.
People should never get that combo confused.
If Verdine White chooses to have another bass player play in the band so what, he's older now and sometimes one has to delegate some aspects of their show to others for things to work.
EWF is still touring and tours when ever they feel like it, not to many bands can do that these days while turning out financially successful tours.

I agree, he has contributed much to the world of music and has influenced thousands of bass players. He can do whatever the hell he wants to do.
Being ewf, that's even more reason not to do this. That's what milli vanilli and Britney spears do. This is ewf. Supposedly a really really great band.

Don't shoot me y'all but I stopped listening to them when they got all shiny and pretty. When they had the big afros, kalimba, and that hard raw sound I was down. It pretty much ended with Evil for me. Still they are a very talented organization and verdine can play his azz off. It's true that someone else plays bass with them live.

Here he is playing Shining Star and September at the Grammy Museum. Totally live, and sounds just like his playing on the records to me (apart from the tone of the bass) 
I saw EWF in September. I was front and center at the show.
I can tell you with 100% certainty that he played every note from start to finish.
The show was amazing. I was very impressed and I've been to other EWF concerts.
This was the best one by far.

I'm guessing it was some sort of pickup group for the Grammy functions. It does not sound like they rehearsed.
Mmhmm, and those synth horns are awful! Still though, Verdine is laying it down; interesting that he does seem to actually play a lot of stuff in the 1st position. Probably his double bass background...
