Vernian Process

so i've been listening to this band called vernian process which i discovered due to listening to abney park. anyone on here heard of Vernian Process. is so does anyone know whats going on there effects-wise? specifically on The Alchemists Vision and Crime Of The Century

a friend of mine tells me that vernian process is just a bunch of synthesized tracks. I personally don't know the details and am trying to get some of the tones on these tracks regardless.

for those who haven't heard these here are links

First off: thank you for listening to our music. I'm glad to see there's some interest here. If anything, it's an incentive for me to become more active here again.

My life has been hectic, but that excuse only goes so far. :D

Anyhow - to the meat and potatoes! Our album Behold the Machine was a hybrid recording effort, so what was used varies from track to track. Our next album (The Consequences of Time Travel)is going to feature very little in the way of synth bass except where it suits the song.

For "The Alchemist's Vision" specifically, we used both. Sequenced synth bass is present for the intro and verses. The chorus sections feature either a Music Man SUB or a Sterling, I believe, with no effects. I'd have to double check and see which we used for that track. When I play it live, I use a Stingray for the entirety of the song and kick in a POG2 for a sub octave in the intro and outro. It sounds pretty epic when paired with the cello line.

"Crime of the Century" is from the earlier days of Vernian Process and did not get released on the final version of Behold the Machine. According to our guitarist/producer (who recorded bass on that track) he believes he used a Steinberger Spirit for it (if not that, a Sterling), again with no effects. Eventually, we'll get around to revising and re-recording it for proper inclusion on a future album.

As time goes on, we're using more effects on bass. It is partly my fault. :D

So just to clarify for the OP, the tracks he linked are mostly clean bass with no effects, with some programmed synth on Alchemist, yes?

Cool music BTW!

Yep!

And just to give you an idea of tracks with a different flavor altogether:

"Something Wicked (That Way Went)": That one is 100% Stingray with subtle palm muting techniques for a thumpier result.

Invalid Link Removed: Here's one where I did use effects. Clean Stingray for the verses, and then we blended an Ashdown Bass Drive Plus with an MXR Blowtorch for the chorus sections.

I used a Tech 21 Red Ripper for live distortion until recently. It was awesome for that song. Unfortunately, it burned out and I need to replace it.

The rest of my board (which I haven't posted in ages) will find special uses on the next album.

Im going to be honest the main thing i expected to here was that there was an octaver involved in which it seems there is.

so firstly its awesome that the actual bassist of vernian process is on here so thank you for creating awesome music.

next one of the things i really wanted to know is if there was any chorus on Alchemists Vision since it sounds like there is to me(obviously from the replies there isn't) but im probably just out of my head.

also Janus Zarate are you using any preamps or compressors because i really love the tone you get.

also Is there octaver on I Am The Sea(my personal fav VP song) or are those just different synth/ instruments being played at the same time.

and lastly do you exclusively use the POG2 for octave or are there any others you have used.

hope to here more from vernian process the music is great.

The ambient elements are largely applied to the other instruments on that track. I think the bass (where it's present in the song) was left clean.

In the studio we have traditionally left it to modeling and plugins, but for some tracks we brought my full rig for miking (a GK Fusion 550, GK Neo 410, Sennheiser MD421mkII).

Live, I usually fire up the full rig plus effects where needed. No compression live, but I have toyed with making a compressor a part of my setup again for always-on use.

You're referring to the B-side that never made it to the album (the one we replaced with "The Exile" for the album release)? We're using pipe organ, choir, harpsichord, sampled drums, orchestral elements such as strings and brass, guitar with various effects, but the bass is clean I believe. I'll have to ask our guitarist; he recorded that one before I joined.

"The Exile" features a delay plugin for the bridge section, though. That was fun. Very Floyd. I use an MXR Carbon Copy for that one live.

The POG2 has been there from the start... and I have some special uses for it that will be recorded very, very soon. ;)
