Duke's cabs are nothing short of amazing. I've been up close and personal with a couple of them and I'm super impressed. Guys at the SeaTac GTG were basically drooling on his new x4 designed cabs (Hathor?). While I am no fan of 18's in a bass rig, from what I hear, you wouldn't know by listening... Crossover magic at play.

Local bud Passinwind's Thunderchild AC (AE ?) is a stellar sounding cab and he came back from that GTG thinking about a 2x4" top box and x-over for his nEarful subs setup... Passinwind, being the mad scientist and all is not easily impressed...

Yeah, that's a Thunderchild 112AF (acoustic-friendly). It's a little easier to close-mike than a 3-way cab, but I tend to prefer a stereo room mike pair for bass anyway. Gotta have a nice room for that to work though. I just DI and post-process if I want the close-miked sound, or want to really leverage a particular preamp's voicing.

Duke's using a pair of 5s with the Hathor 18 cab. The little Faital 3s and 4s are great drivers though, and he pairs those with a 12 or 15, respectively. I've actually been messing with the 2X4 top box concept for a couple of years already -- sounds great but the TC112 is more than enough for almost anything I do these days and much easier to lug around. IMHO, any of these cabs with a mid driver rather than a horn are a little easier to close-mike.

I've also been doing the DSP thing for several years. With the right cab that approach might suit the OP really well. I prefer doing the programming myself though, and find multiple preset capability very handy.
