Versitality of P Basses?

On my Jazz bass, I adjust the pickup balance and the tone to the sound I like the most and rarely change the setting. That is the tone I want from the bass. Honestly, I think I adjust it to sound like my Precision.

I don't know what a "one trick pony" is (unless you mean the Paul McCartney song, but the P bass is a very versatile bass. It's the only one I use, and I don't even have a tone control in mine. Don't miss it, either, as the tone control is in my fingers.
I've owned multiple P's and J's, and I've used both models for lots of different types of music. The J with one of its two pickups so close to the bridge gives a little more treble bite to my ears, but if you string a P with Rotosounds or something similar you'll get a nice growl also. Although they sound different tone-wise to me, I think both are suitable for a variety of genres. It comes down to which sound you like better. If either had to serve as my one and only bass, I'd be OK with it.
P basses have been one-trick ponies in R&B, funk, blues, rock, blues, fusion, reggae and country music. Sorry.
Not really a one trick pony. A Precision can be very dark and boomy, but also very bright because of the very powerful open polepiece pickup wired in series. There's a lot you can get out of the tone knob, and there's nay a situation where a P won't fit.
As has been said, the tone also comes from your technique, though most of the time it will still sound like a P. That's not a bad thing though, as I love the sound of a Precision. Most people do, it's all over most popular music.

Anyhow. I have been playing a Precision since 2002 through Country, Rock of all eras, Big Band, Blues, classic & newer R & B, and as I work through the different types of music I've never once thought, "I wish I had a _____ bass for this."
All basses a great. Especially the new ones these days. It's just what you put into making the song work.
