VERY newbie question: Is this... slap?

I've been playing for two weeks. I just wondered. That's all.



Sort of starts off softly there, and then moves onto some truly aggresive type stuff (for me). Especially at the end which (to me as a newbro) is insane.

Is this sampled, or is some awesome dude actually playing this?

No, not slap. Drum machine. In fact, from where you started the video, I didn't even hear anything that remotely sounded like bass until 3:42 or so, which is also a drum machine sound.

I bet a ton a guys will follow my post with real bass you can use.

Are you saying no bass guitar was actually involved?

I sort of hear something simple early, and you could easily parse that out, but no...this song not something you want to model your playing after, unless you really love it.

It's not a song I'd want to sit and teach myself. It was just the bit at the end. As a newbro I pictured some guy banging the strings and pulling them into all kinds of shapes with a big grin and great enthusiasm. In fact I used it as an example to an exclusively electronic loving buddy of how Bass guitars are fun.

But not the sort of thing I'd actually go out and play. Apart from the "slap" bit. I'd like to be able to play something like that .

It sounds like just octaves to me. If you start with basic slap exercises, I bet you could be playing that within weeks.

I'll get there. I'm still dealing with awkward and technical things like key changes for now.
Not bad for 2 weeks' work .

That's about where I'm at at the minute. I love it . Playing along. Y'know .

Also. I AM a drummer. I'm a drummer of 15 years' experience!*

I'm just... without kit at the moment.

My guess is MIDI slap bass tone.

The more I listen to it, the more I lean to a heavily plucked or even picked tone.

It's the Yamaha DX7's slap bass tone. Synth. You could slap it though.

When I find that pocket and am completely locked in with my drummer, i'm almost in some weird auto pilot mode. Its hard to explain but you'll know it when you're there.

That band doesn't have a bass player, but they have some awesome synth bass parts! My band does "Rather Be" and it is a beast of a bassline.
