VH1 Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp

Any one checking out VH1 rock and roll fantasy camp? First episode just broadcast this week. Campers auditioned and were selected by camp counselors into their respective bands. Bass playing counselors are represented by pros Kip Winger and Rudy Sarzo. Campers are represented by amateur Joes and Janes with a few seasoned musicians in the mix. Bass players seem to be holding their own with Singers/drummers and guitards receiving the most constructive criticism at least in the first episode.

I saw it a few years ago and saw an amateur on the show that couldn't play at all. If I was paying $5000 (or whatever they charge) for the privilege of a "fantasy camp", I would be pretty pissed off if I was put in a band with someone who had never played before. That is not my idea of a "rock and roll fantasy".

It's like being invited to the Playboy mansion and ending up with a fat, ugly chick.

I don't know if these folks paid $5000 or were simply a group of colorful characters chosen by the producers to be in the show. One of the female guitards selected to be in one of the bands is certainly no shredder. An attractive blond, she appears to have been selected more for the fact she wore a mini-skirt to the audition. She is one of the musical weak links that need extra attention to get up to speed since she can barely string 3 chords together. Appears that the producer gave everyone a list of possible classic rock songs to learn ahead of time and she is one of the folks that did not do their homework.

Agreed The singer from Scotland's performance was bad. Hard to tell if he can actually sing but needed another song in his range or is someone that is delusional about his actual vocal talent. Sounded very flat. Every karaoke bar I've ever been to has a few guys like him who think they are singers after a couple rounds of drinks.

Yeah, I saw it. I was not impressed ...by anything.

It doesn't seem like a show that would be enjoyable by musicians but rather music enthusiasts. I mean, half the show was bands rehearsing, which is something I do on a regular basis and thus not very entertaining. It's like if you worked in a shoe store and then someone made a show about a shoe salesman. You would be sitting there going "yeah, so what?"

Then after the rehearsing, there are a couple lack luster performances that remind me of every bar cover band I've ever seen. Snooze.

And to top it all off, Mr. RainbowBeard McKnowitall pisses me off. That guy might have created success in the past but all I've seen out of him so for is incompetence in his leadership.

I don't think I'll be watching that show again.

I caught this show randomly today... and it reminded me why I rarely watch TV. It didn't look like fun at all. Playing mediocre 80's songs while getting yelled at by a dude with a rainbow beard? It's kind of depressing. I guess that most people that will follow it don't really know there is a difference between playing an instrument and being a musician. Why are there music shows that are basically glorified karaoke contests?

I didn't see the show, but the act with Mr. Kilty McPickelnuts was on there, without his vocals. Frankly, just seeing this cat made me think he was a tool, and a disgrace to those of us who wear kilts onstage.

And yes, that would be me.

Regardless of what you think of Kip Winger, he has written some extremely high-selling songs, has networked successfully over his career, and has made a pretty high-level career for himself. Regardless of whether or not this guy has Steve Bailey's chops, I'd sit down, STFU and listen.

Just a few career highlights. He's been the lead singer for the Alan Parsons Project, was a studio work horse for Beau Hill on bass and vocals, and played bass for Alice Cooper's band for about 2 years.

He's written a classical symphonic piece, which was turned into a ballet that was done by the San Francisco Ballet.

Any of us able to say we've done even half of that? Probably very few if any of us. I'm sure he'd be the first to admit he's not Bill Pickens, much less Slim Pickens. But he's seen some very successful times, recorded, written and produced with some very talented musicians, and pays his bills with his music. Don't overlook his skills so lightly.

She's over on facebook, BTW. LOL. Including some of her songs, which more or less run the gamut from unimginitive '80s retreads to "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot." And to be honest, she's just too cliche for me to even worry about her getting naked.

I wasn't that impressed. It may be fun to watch, we'll see. The kilt guy sucked bad. My band could certainly learn an song in a couple hours. Hell, we learn 10 songs in an hour rehearsal.

I have watched it so far and just feel frustrated for the actual musicians...the ones who can actually play. That blonde is no doubt the weakest player up there, but at least the show doesn't try to sugarcoat it or hide it. Also that leather-jacketed former Warrant guitarist has been pretty annoying, along with that female keyboard player. And can Janelle get through ONE song without crying afterwards? :rollno:

If I were there, I would prefer to work with Rudy, although I have been impressed with Kip Winger's approach. He seems to have a grasp on how to teach and produce results better than the other two...so far.

I like all three of the bass players, as they seem to be solid players, even the one guy that everyone says is slightly out of tune! LOL
