it's only your opinion, sound is not everything. So even if you don't like Wooten's sound you do have to agree, that he is an ultra skilled bassist, not even talking about double thumping (which he has developed on he's own). His tapping is very good and fingerstyle is sick too! Just listen to his albums man, he is a very flexible player.
Wooten really feels the groove and his fast thumping is very tricky and hard to play in rhythm section. Also he improvises as no one I've ever heard before.

It;s not true that he doesn't got technique:scowl:

Watched both those videos. That wasn't sloppy. Even if you thought it was sloppy, you never said whether or not it grooved... which, IMO, it did. Personally, I think groove is more important than clean.

You don't like it because you can't make it sound good. If you don't play above your own skill, how will you ever improve? Your skill level is up to you. It's not a limit, it's a threshold.

You're suffering from sharp-knees syndrome.

I am sorry "seeinsidemycell" but I believe that you are lilterier. If you aren't you have extremely similar views. Between putting down good bass players, judging them only upon one aspect of their playing, and have the obvious intention of getting a reaction out of people you definatley seem to be lilterier from the "lead bass playing" thread.

Hey no offense taken man :) , but I don't understand why you're saying this to me? I don't put anyone in a category, I hate that, what I meant to say (and I think I did the best I could with my knowledge of english) is that Wooten can somtimes sound a bit sloppy, as indeed do we all, it doesn't change my respect for him.

Victor Wooten is incredible. As a musician and a person. His music is wonderful, he has such talent as a player and a technician. He always knows what the song needs, and consistently delivers.

You can keep your Stings and other root note thumpers, Victor Wooten has all that and more! :D

So you still playing roots and fifths. :bawl: If you don't challenge yourself you don't learn to be creative. We grow from trying new techniques and notes. Sometime we make mistakes, but mistakes are opportunities to learn as we turn mistakes into good notes.

As Miles Davis said there are no mistakes only opportunies. Also Joe Pass said it's only a wrong note depending on what you play after it. Even guys who play simple parts are trying new notes and rhythms.

Some of the greatest player of all time their technique wasn't great technically. Miles and his sputtering sound would drive a trumpet teacher crazy, but that sputter bacame part of his sound. Coltrane would step on notes now and then, but he was saying so much in his playing no one cared. Many of the great bass players if you heard their raw sound in the studio you hear clicks and other noise till the engineer tweaked things. I listen to a lot of Victor and I don't think hes a sloppy player at all. His time and groove are great. I think I saw in the thread you say his double-thumbing isn't even no one is. Thumb down is all flesh, thumb up catches part of the nail and changes the timbre slightly. Thats life.

If you not into Victor that's cool. I'm not into most the bass players that get mentioned here, but I either just say they aren't my thing, or I keep my mouth shut. Flea is my own example I was not a fan of his playing. All I had heard until then was his clicky-clacky slap stuff. But see so much talk I went back and listen some more and discover his fingerstyle stuff is really cool. He's also doing some double-stop stuff I like. Got to keep your mind open. Life is too short to be a hater and to short just to keep playing the same thing over and over. :D

+1000 my friend. This ridiculous attempt to critique Wooten that closely is really only worth of one response and I believe yours Chris sums it up the best.:hyper:

The thing about Victor is that he's reached a level of musicianship AND technique that allows him to express at an incredible level. Most musicians, you can hear one limiting the other, but he is seemingly able to envision an incredible range of note choices/sounds, and then has the technique to do it. A rare combination for sure...
