Victor Wooten Bass Tuning

All his basses are standard except for the natural Fodera with the sticker on it. That ones tenor.

I wanna know what he's playing on the "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" song. At about 2 minutes and some change in that song the low note he hits is astounding. That's not an E string.

This is correct. However, on any given song on any given night (and probably at times in the studio as well), he will retune / detune a bass to serve the song...
He played his Compito fretless five string for that song. So the tuning would be BEADG.
Ooooooh....tell me about this mystical device? As a newbie, I'm uneducated on effects. What does it do?
An octaver lets you blend a sub-octave into your signal - or possibly cut out the original signal and let only the sub-octave through. Do a search in the effects forum, you'll be able to dig up tons of info about the effect there
In the track mentioned above, I think Victor clicks the effect on and off, adding a fairly subtle sub-octave to some sections of the solo, mainly the ones where he's playing in the low range, making more of a contrast to the higher notes. It does sound great.

I thought I remembered reading more from Victor on this song... Regardless, it definately sounds like a natural tone down on the B string as oppose to an octave pedal to me...

I read that one too...I love the part where they test the speakers with it!!
You can play that one with drop-D on a fretless...Try it!
Play the octave parts straight across.(Low-D & high-D strings) Lots of fun!
(sounds OK on fretted also) edit..
I'm sure it's the natural tone, it just sounds to me like he adds a subtle sub-octave to it - I'm not saying the tone itself is sub-octave.
But it's just a guess, of course, they could have made that sound in the studio in other ways, too
