Victor Wooten's Groove Workshop

I had the good fortune to attend one of Victor's Bass/Nature camps about 2 years ago (where Ant is/was also prominently featured and very, very helpful). I had watched the video a few months before I went down to TN, and I must say that the video does a fantastic job of capturing the sprit of the BNC camps. I highly recommend everyone put attending a BNC on their bucket list... but watching the Groove Workshop video is the next best thing.

Personally, I can't wait for my next opportunity to make it to a camp or to have a one-on-one lesson with Mr. Wellington!

Yo Greg,

You have to bring me down for another clinic!

Yessir, I can't wait to do that! We've bought a new building that will eventually have a big studio room that will serve double duty as a performance/clinic area. Should be cool when it's done, and we'd love to have you back to break it in!

I have to admit, I illegally downloaded this DVD, but after watching through the first one, which concludes with Anthony's yardstick method, I went and bought it from Guitar Center. It is truly worth it.

I've been playing guitar for 10 years and bass for about a year now and the insights Victor through out there about music seriously blew my mind. Its just so right, and it almost makes you feel foolish to realize what you had been doing this whole seems so silly now.

It's really not just for bassists! I would have greatly benefitted from this video 10 years ago when I started plying guitar. I even showed my drummer the yardstick method to help explain time to him and it did wonders.

Anthony, I cannot wait for your DVD and I promise that I will make the right decision this time and purchase it first, since I know that it is clearly worth it.

I added the Groove Workshop dvd as an afterthought to a gear order and am really glad I did. After watching it, I got the same feeling as bijna did. Everyone always talks about notes and scales and theory... The approach that you guys took share in that workshop/dvd is a great perspective that you just don't hear that often.

For sure! I'd love to work out going to one of Victor's camps sometime, but in the meantime this is a great little window. I've watched the dvds 3 times so far and have taken away something new each time.

Thanks Anthony, and it's great to see you active on the TB forum! Been a fan of yours for a while now... when are YOU going to do a solo cd? ;) :bassist:

Yo 5sg,

I'm probably gonna' do a record. But it won't be a bass record. I'm just not a big fan of bass records. It'll be more reminiscent of R&B and Funk from the 70s and 80s. There will be some horn sections songs. Some songs are close to done but I have to admit,...I'm in no rush to finish it. My thoughts about doing a record have change. It's no longer special to have a CD. Everyone and their grandmother has a CD. It used to be that only talented people put out records,...but not anymore.

We'll see how I feel in the new year.

peace,
anthony

"Smells Like Funk"

A slight derail from the thread I guess, but... Sounds PERFECT Anthony! By "solo cd" I didn't necessarily mean "solo BASS cd," just more like I'd like to see what your own project would be. ;)

I've been gravitating much more to "The Groove" over the last few years, especially after the Groove Workshop. Hearing a master of his/her instrument performing music that showcases them isn't bad, but I've grown out of that "bass record" mentality you mentioned. I do admit to still listening to some of those albums on occasion... I still cue up A Show Of Hands, the album that inspired me to start playing bass (the remaster is great, btw!), but my favorite group over the last few years has been Tower of Power. Like you said, everyone has a cd these days and one person can master their instrument and "show off" on a solo record, but getting a 10-piece band that tight is something! I've also started to really explore Motown lately... Jamerson had some of the greatest basslines ever, but they worked WITH the groove, they didn't overpower it.

Looking forward to hearing how your album turns out, I'll be watching for it!

Why do you think that is? Vanity publishing?

I was just recently discussing this with a drummer friend... We think it's at least partly due to the age of digital recording. You can get a pretty good home recording setup for a pretty decent price these days. Between the two of us and without even thinking hard, we know a handful of people with legit home studios.

Yes sir, I concur - that's generally what I was getting at in regards to "Vanity Recording". Only I guess you don't even have to pay someone anymore to publish your own work.

I think it's a good thing, though. More tools for musicians is always welcome.

Anthony, I get what you're saying. But despite the ubiquitous of home-grown CD's, I'd still rather listen to one of yours.

"Ubiquitousness", I meant. Damn iPhone spell-checker...
