I borrowed a concept known as Cantus Firmus from an 18th century classical counterpoint manual known as the Gradus ad Parnassum and applied to to jazz bass soloing. It's really useful for creating lyrical and melodic bass parts that break away from root-oriented thinking, and I created a nifty video lesson breaking down all the necessary steps.
I've also heard of this method called the target tone method, and some teachers like using it as a means of breaking away from a scalar approach to playing solos.
