Vietnam war songs

Most of the songs suggested so far are what I would classify as protest songs. Yeah I played and listened to these songs back in the day but ...

Granted this is a motorcycle club but they are Vietnam Vets. So I question the wisdom of some of these protest songs. I'm just saying ...

Here are some others you might want to consider:

Purple Heart - Vietnam Veterans Song - Heros
Purple Heart - Vietnam Veterans Song - Heroes - YouTube

Memorial Day- Part of Me Is Still In Vietnam
MEMORIAL DAY - "Part Of Me Is Still In Vietnam" - YouTube!

Greg Wilson - Duty Called
Duty Called - Greg Wilson - Vietnam Veterans Song - YouTube

The Wall
The Wall Song - YouTube

The Eagle Cried
The Eagle Cried ~ Vietnam Veterans Tribute - YouTube

OK more mainstream, The Boss - Born In The USA
Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A. - YouTube

Another approach to take might be to play some of the top songs of the War Years.
Vietnam War Era Music

Good luck

I spent 5 months in Naval Hospital San Diego in 1969. A few years ago "Crystal Blue Persuasion" came on the radio when I was over at my sister's house, and she yelled, "Hospital song!" She said there were a bunch of songs that were on the radio when they came to visit me in the hospital. I knew exactly what she meant, since I was trapped in a hospital bed for almost half of 1969 and all I could do was listen to the radio.

While most of these don't pertain directly to the war, they were popular tunes at the time. I have them in a playlist on my iPod.

Aquarius - Fifth Dimension
Dizzy - Tommy Roe
Sugar Sugar - The Archies
Crimson and Clover - Tommy James
Crystal Blue Persuasion - Tommy James
Na Na Hey Hey - Steam
Take a Letter Maria - R.B. Greaves
Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations
Time of the Season - The Zombies
Good Morning Starshine - Oliver
Spinning Wheel - Blood Sweat and Tears
Hawaii Five-O - The Ventures
Wedding Bell Blues - The Fifth Dimension
In the Year 2525 - Zager and Evans
Witchita Lineman - Glen Campbell
Jean - Oliver
Worst That Could Happen - Brooklyn Bridge
Sweet Cherry Wine - Tommy James
Soulful Strut - Young - Holt Limited

It was a good year for Tommy James.

Yes i was thinking more songs from that era, rather than protest song thanks for the links

I'm sure there's a Bob Dylan song or two you could play. But I'm with some of the other guys that I would avoid war-related material. Especially some of the more hippie-minded protest songs. Not begrudging hippies of that era, they're a fun bunch, but not really the route you probably wanna take.

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter

As a 2 time veteran of Afghanistan, I couldn't even imagine what it would be like to come back from Vietnam, especially to an angry, pissed off population. When I think of the Westboro Baptist Church and Fred Phelps it makes me want to pick up a weapon and add another notch to my belt. If you really want them to know they're appreciated just tell them 'thanks' and maybe buy them a beer (less likely as there will be alot of 'em). I can't speak for the 'Nam Vets but I can say that when I'm walking through an airport and someone says 'thanks for your service' or something along those lines it makes me proud that I do what I do and it makes me feel like the sacrifices that I've made and the sacrifices of my friends who have lost their lives in Afghanistan were not in vain.

Just my 2 cents.

Some more suggestions. I emailed a friend who is a Marine Vietnam combat veteran about this. His response was this:

"We Gotta Get Outta this Place; Born to be Wild; Night Moves; Satisfaction; Light my Fire; War; Let It Be; and maybe What's Going On would be my choices. The first song will bring the house down."

Again good luck.

There are only Protest songs about War...Who the hell would write a Pro-War song...especially about Vietnam.

Agree...either protests at the war or how people were treated. The first one is US, the second two are Australian but could be adapted to fit American without much trouble. I can't imagine that things were much different for US vs Australian vets :

Huey Lewis & The News - Walking On A Thin Line - YouTube
Cold Chisel - Khe Sanh - YouTube
Redgum - I Was Only 19 (1983) - YouTube

If you decide to use either of the Australian songs and need help with the meaning of any of the lyrics pm me.

"Ballad Of The Green Berets". Not specifically a pro-war song, but one that's definitely supportive of the PEOPLE who fought the war.

But, it's really a pretty terrible song. The sentiment is one thing, but the mechanics (chords, melody, etc.) are pretty lame. Much like most open mic folky original acts....
