Vietnam war songs

My band are playing a show in november for a Vietnam veterans Motorcyle club, at a Car and bike show and we think it would be a good idea if we learned a few of those cool songs that you alway hear in movies about vietnam war,

We are thinking of possibly playing a few songs as a medley.

Fortunate son by Creedance is one we are gonna try.

Any suggestions hear would be great.

What's Goin' On for sure.

The troops were listening to a lot of Motown, Creedance, radio play from the time. Check out the soundtrack from Good Morning Vietnam. That pretty well nails it.

Thanks thats the movie i was trying to think of!
Basically want i really needed to know

But i will be checking out the other songs too

Ssgt Barry Sanders Ballad of the Green Berets comes to mind, it always made me feel proud ... and most importantly, thank them, and then thank them again ... and if you haven't been clear about it, thank them again ...

... this group of soldiers came back from war to jeers and ridicule, from a non-understanding public that could not possibly understand the mental and physical toll taken on many barely mature individuals in Southeast Asia, and from a war that the public wanted to forget, but the soldiers never would ... a society that has never really accepted the sacrifices made by a group of individuals and their families, nor has ever rightly thanked them enough ... fortunately, times have changed ... soldiers are now applauded, and given parades in their honor at the time of their return, and is rightly so ...

... in case I didn't mention it, it doesn't matter a lot what you play, but music from their day would be a great idea, but it is probably less important to remind them, than it is to thank them ... and then thank them again ... and then, once again, just in case they missed it the first few times ... but be sincere please .. thank you

Well put Lbwdog and tjh, I'm not from that era, however I am an aid to a disabled Vietnam Vet, I usually ask him about music from that time. I would say along the lines of saying thank you, stear clear from any anti war songs and stick to radio play of the day as someone said. Motown is a good place to start, I heard Mothers of Invention was popular. I know Close to You by the carpenters was a big one becasue it made soldiers think of their girls back home, but I don't think that's the vibe you want either. Just play good music and thank them for there service, they'll dig it no matter what. I sense some of the guys from that time are chiming in way to go. Fred

I just read a post w/ All along the watch tower, good one!

Rooster by Alice in Chains.

Uh... When did that come out? '92? I think the OP meant "Vietnam era" songs pretty much. "Rooster" wasn't directly about the Vietnam War, but a song about a soldier in the war...

I honestly don't think that counts. Alice in Chains weren't necessarily writing in protest of the war (which ended 17 years before the song was written) like most songs about Vietnam. Close, but no cigar.
