Clearly has chops, his approach just isn't for me. I don't generally dig on lead bass with a ton of percussive sounds and a "cram as many notes in as you can" style. It's kinda the exact opposite of where my musical tastes have been heading lately (lush & atmospheric synthesis). I was, however, quite impressed by the tightness of the band in the first video.
People are, on the internet - huge social media followings. Even subbed in on bass for Cory Wong
Maybe people who would’ve been into him a decade ago are collectively now in a Chops Overload state and all needing a couple years of simplicity & song-serving?

Monster player yeah, got him a gig with Cory Wong. But he overplays most of the time and his videos genuinely are anxiety-inducing to me

When he's laying down in the pocket, he sounds awesome, but the Jeff Berlin stuff's a bit exhausting.
Same. The Dirty Loops Hadrien Thundercat thing just doesn't hit the spot anymore, for me at least.
Still has its fans and it's niche, I'm sure there's a crowd of people that got burnt out on the Sparky Puppy Berklee funk thing that were deep into it when it was new early 2010s
yeah, I went down a tiny rabbit hole on that stuff again because of this thread.
It’s a genre. I suppose it used to be called Jazz Fusion when it was a new thing. I think that’s what this stuff is? I’m currently of the opinion that it’d be more accurate to call it Chops Music. I think many/most musicians get really into it for a period of their lives.
After the little run through YouTube listening to 5-30 seconds of twenty or so videos of Rocco, Jaco, and a couple others, I kinda wish I could delete that post of mine.
I'm planning on seeing Cory Wong this Feb, hoping he's still playing with him. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Sonny T again, saw Cory last tour with Sonny, just a staggeringly incredible bass player.

He's amazing, great tone, incredible chops, and actually a great groove too. Overplaying for sure, but it's helping him stand out so whatever I guess.
His overall aesthetic is a bit dated and simpllistic, built on the Rocco/Jaco kind of funk thing. But he does it so well that I'm transcribing some of his stuff. It's chop-sy but much simpler to decipher than somebody like Hadrien. It's a technical exercise for me, but I'd rather have too much technique to draw on rather than too little. I trust in my own self-control to prevent me from overplaying, on the off chance that I suddenly gain as much technique as he has.

A killer player. Thanks for sharing. My favorite was the third one "Why Not". Had a Marcus Miller kind of vibe. The last one was pretty cool. They were both great and played well off each other. The first 2 showed his chops, but I'm not a fan of that tone. I'm guessing he was using flats and they are not my thing.
