Vintage Ampeg SVT Question

if i had it to do over again with the di's, i think i might have gone with the radial instead of the countryman. not sure if i'd have gotten the jdi or jdv, but they both do speaker di. but now that i got the vt deluxe, i really don't have much of a need for one anymore, although maybe it would sound cool to use the vt deluxe AND the countryman. hmmm...maybe i can bring even more stuff to my gigs!

:bassist:

well for one thing it's not as big ;) i don't know...haven't really been able to ab them but i get the impression that the radials might be just a little better sounding. could be wrong, though...there's not much to dislike about the countryman.

I emailed Radial, will post their response once I get it. You are correct that would be the easiest solution.

So I got a response back from Radial. Here is what they have to say.

You can use this connection if you wish:

Amp>Speaker Out> JDI>JDI Thru> Speaker and/or JDI Balanced out to mixer.

Also the "Speaker" button is only a filter and not required, if you do not want the "speaker sim" effect you can leave that button disengaged. It is however reccomended that the 15db pad be engaged when uing the JDI post power amp.

didn't know that, though.

+1 to the countryman..
you know my fav one Jimmy R E D .......... but that countryman is a wonder worker and state of the art DI.. set to Speaker on the Input and take a feed off of your speaker cab...

The Countyman DI can be placed between amp and cabinet giving you all the full goodness of your SVT's power section to the board. Mic'ing is good too.

Hi,

I'm having the same issue. I bought vintage b25b and I plan to use it live also. Sound technician prefer not micing it so how would I get that ampeg sound out? My amp has ext amp out. Should I go from ext amp into DI (passive or active?)? Would I get just preamp that way or also power tube section?
Btw I'm planing to buy radial JDI...

Thanks for your help.

The ext amp on the vintage Ampeg amps is a pre out/ power amp in. You can connect a DI but it would not provide a contribution from the power amp. So until you buy the radial DI, one option is to connect a DI to the ext amp and mic the cab and mix the two signals. Don't take any guff from the sound tech.

How about 'Speaker Emulator' like Invalid Link Removed?

Invalid Link Removed

For live monitoring, speakers may be connected while the reactive load is automatically switched off.

Yeah, too bad, I like the sound of the Palmer when we tried it actually (I forgot what amp we were using it with tho), LOL
so maybe just like few suggestions before, it's [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

And with this new 500 series module, bass amps can join into the fun! Use the standard 4x12 emulation to capture the robust mid-range tone of an SVT or power-up the bottom end using the low frequency extension. Choice of 100 and 300 watt settings are available. The on-board low-pass filter gently smoothes the top end to tame overtly bright amps.

Radial claims the JDX works with bass, and they do know what bass is supposed to sound like, I believe. But after getting burned by the Hughes And Kettner Red Box, I would really like to try it out first. Fortunately, I have a REDDI, so it's a moot issue for me ;)

Sure Jimmy.
Hmm RedDI,.. if only I can try the Eclaire, from Tony Levin's DI comparo I like it a bit better,.. but, yes, RedDI is what is best in reality for me now. If only the thread is not particularly about how to connect an SVT which has no DI out,...I'd really like to recommend RedDI.

I think it can be from the amp's usual output for the speaker to the JDX then from the JDX 'speaker out jack' to the speaker, while the JDX XLR out to the house/PA, so "put it between the amp and the speaker", although perhaps it doesn't matter which amp's output...CMIIW tho cause I'm not too tech knowledge actually :D

I always mic first with an AKG P2 (20 - 16000hz response). Then maybe occasionally blend a DI into it but that's not really necessary. The P2 doesn't have a baked in sound designed for kick drums and will faithfully reproduce the sound of your cabinet. That's what you hear, that's what you EQ'd your bass to. Your cabinet is an integral component of your tone. That's what should be sent to FOH.

This is my general philosophy and not just SVT specific.

In his question, miking the cab is not an option.
