Vintage fender or fender masterbuilt

I've owned a bunch of vintage Fender and Custom Shop including Masterbuilts and have YET play a CS bass that plays anything close to my best vintage Fenders.
The satisfaction of having a bass built to your own specs is different to the satisfaction of finding a great vintage bass, and only you know which is going to please you more. The thrill of the hunt would do it for me, though the $$$$ difference might make me hesitate.

Hi , I'm on the verge of getting a new bass for my 40th year on this earth.
Several options were possible but I decided to narrow it down to a choice that would make sense ( I am a pro bass player, meaning I earn my living playing music, mostly the bass).
my arsenal now is
a pbass custom shop pino palladino (with flats or course)
a Sadowsky NYC Will Lee
a Sadowsky MV5
with those 3 basses, I can do almost anything.
but 40 years old, damn, I want to treat myself
So I am thinking about getting either and old Jazz bass (65 or 66)
or a masterbuilt Jazz bass by the fender custom shop
the only other option would be getting a pbass with rounds (custom shop or vintage)
so the main question is between a custom shop masterbuilt or vintage.
the masterbuilt is supposed to the best you can get, and I like the fact that if any problem happens, I have a warranty
The vintage, my fear is if something goes wrong, but man, when you get a good sounding one, nothing compares
which way would you guys go?
Masterbuilt basses are amazing, but also overpriced by about 50%.
Given your current stable I'd look for a killer vintage P with rounds.
I’d go vintage, if for no other reason than retaining resale values. I wouldn’t even dare think about buying one without being able to play it first though.
If you're a collector, vintage. If you're a player, I'd say custom shop.
I did that for my 40th birthday, as well. I have a hard time justifying a vintage instrument, although I'd like to get a birth year bass. I'm just not sure I would use it. I prefer 5 strings these days. That being said, I'd get a CS. Whatever you get I hope it exceeds your wildest dreams! Happy Birthday!

You already have very nice palette of newer instruments. Time for a crown jewel in that collection.
I've celebrated 40 years of playing bass earlier this year. Owned and played pre-CBS Fenders, CS range, various takes on the classic designs from builders like Suhr and Lull. All great stuff.
Having said that, if someone told me that I had to pick one Fender bass to play for the rest of my life - and I'm not into FSOs these days - it would be a '61 Jazz that belonged to a (now sadly deceased) friend of mine. To this day I haven't heard anything with a Fender logo that spoke with such an authority. But that's me.

Happy Birthday ! 40 was harder mentally then 50 and 60 was a breeze!
This is really simple...I would get both
I would pass on the master built to offset the cost of buying both.
I would order the custom shop to have now and continue the search more relaxed with more time to find that special vintage Fender!

Going vintage,, for me,, would mean a lot of shopping and playing and being ready to pull the trigger when you find the right one.
Might even mean a little traveling to go check out some shops. Maybe a little weekend getaway to check out some shops - make a trip to Austin and check out Austin Vintage Guitars. Great shop, and Austin ain't too bad either.
If I was going vintage, I'd be open to either a J or a P, depending on what I found.
