I would try to get a newer L-1000. Or, conversely, get an L-2000 (a little easier to find) and have someone do the OMG mod to the neck pickup or the k-mod. It’s possible to have both mods done if you can get your hands on the right circuit drawing, and then you get get all the L-1000 sounds with the L-2000.

Vintage G&L L-1000: Thoughts?

I would try to get a newer L-1000. Or, conversely, get an L-2000 (a little easier to find) and have someone do the OMG mod to the neck pickup or the k-mod. I get it. I have sensitivities to many ubiquitous fragrances. It's not fun, and the not-funness is compounded by generally being misunderstood around it. "Sorry if you don't like the smell..." when actually I do like the smell, except my head hurts and I wish I could vomit but I can't... and I'm just trying to work at this office without your potpourri messing up my commission tier, Janice...
Thankfully I work from home now and found a nice environment to live and work from... anyway, I just wanted to validate that part of your experience with that sweet wunkay.
If you really dug it and your budget allows for a first keeper bass, look at the current CLF Research (G&L) L1000.
I have an (early?) 81 L1000 #B002679 (Black over poplar I think - it's the soft white wood that isn't all that interested in holding black lacquer - 8 lbs 13.2oz, slot pole, Schaller branded tapered tuners) that is an amazing Uber-P without being or sounding active. It's got a lot of organic material attached to it from places I've never been so would trigger your stuff in all likelihood. I also have a '19 CLF L2500 that's super clean and cut from the same cloth and I would recommend as well.
If something at that level isn't ideal, a G&L Tribute Fallout Bass might be perfect. well under $1k brand new, the MFD pickup and shorter scale that as a guitarist you might really prefer.
