Vintage Peavey

Peavey USA Millennium Plus.

Not meant to derail...

Since you posted these I figured you know something about them. The seller is saying that these came stock with drop 'D' tuners. Is this true? I'm including @kodiakblair and @Eilif in this too as they both know a thing or two about Peavey's

I'm not sure if it was just the plus, but I know a lot of USA millennium 4 strings came stock with drop D tuners. Really great basses, lovely neck profile.

I bought mine used (Mint) circa 2004. I believe they came with Drop D.

I am a major fan of the T-40, it's a very uniquely engineered bass that to this day hasn't really got any peers. If you absolutely must have a sub ten-pound bass, it won't work for you but I personally think the sound and feel is worth the weight.

On the weight - it's worth noting that the solid color T-40s are generally lighter. My '82 natural was nearly 12 pounds, but my old '80 white/maple was much lighter and my current '79 black/maple is only a little over 10lbs, very light by t-40 standards. I read somewhere that the solid color ones actually might be Poplar bodies instead of the heavy Ash of the natural and burst finishes, which were selected for grain pattern.
That is true. Except for a few early examples, painted are poplar. Still heavy, but not as heavy as northern ash.

The T40 is a great bass! I bought my first one in 1978! Yes back then mass = sustain, it was a thing. Peavey has lots of great vintage USA models. One of my favorites is the Patriot, the single Super Ferite pickup just kicks and the slim profile neck feels great. Given the pickups close to the bridge location it can mimic a Ric, Musicman and Jazz pretty convincingly.
Another favorite is the Fury it's a P bass killer.

Great info all around. Drawn to the T-20 and the Fury. Did the Fury come in different pick-up configurations-some slant and some single not slanted and some split-coil?
Fury just came as 1st gen slanted single/P-bass wide neck then 2nd and 3rd gen skinny neck/ split coil.

Patriot basses had single coil at right angle to the strings. Some have P-bass necks, a small number the skinny jazz style neck.

I came very close to picking up a Patriot last year, but missed it. It was a refinished one and they wanted $700 for it, which I felt was a little steep. Still, the super ferrite pickup was amazing sounding, just vicious and thick. It did the "angry piano" p-bass thing extremely well.

Actually does anyone know whether the Patriot's pickup location changed during the course of manufacture? Many of the Patriots I hear on YT seem slightly thin sounding, but the particular one I played did not lack low end at all. I don't know what (if anything) changed throughout its run.
