Vintage SVT 810 question

Open the cabinet back? Not without a crowbar! Ampeg 810's do not have removable back panels.

It's 8 screws per speaker. 64 screws. One word - DeWalt. Use the clutch when you put 'em back in though, you don't want to strip any of those screws!

If you have to open the cabinet back (and you probably do) invest in a variable speed reversible electric drill and some phillips screwdriver bits for it. Your wrists will thank you.

With a vintage SVT 8x10 you, HAVE to take the speakers out the front. Philips bits won't help you much with their clutch-head screws either.

Oh yeah, forgot about the clutch screws. Replaced all of mine with phillips heads years ago.

Conclusion for me at the moment: they sound great, they look great... let's leave it like that.

LOL! Way to make a simple job hard!

All you have to do is unscrew one speaker from the front. You don't have to pull all 8 if they match. All my 73 CTS's have the same numbers. There are 8 screws on each speaker. You may have those non-traditional square-hole screws that Jess Oliver had Ampeg use in the old days. I forget what they're called, but you can get the screwdriver for them at any hardware store. It's not hard...just be careful not to poke the screws or driver through the cones

I would definitely check that Linden cab for CTS's. They may have been the cheap option back then, but they sound fantastic. I got mine reconed a few months ago, so now I hear what those speakers are supposed to sound like, and they're the best SVT speakers I've heard.

I'll gonna try to check it out this weekend. I already noticed that it sounds a bit brighter than the Elkhart made cab. But I only tested the at low volume. Imagine two 8x10's and an SVT standing in my apartment... even with the vol at 9 o'clock I thought my house was falling apart.

I can't even turn ONE SVT past halfway without having to make in my pants. I'd have a complete evacuation of all bodily fluids to hear two cranked that loud!

Ooohh. I cant wait to get my CTS loaded '73 straight back cab sunday! One question...Did you have blown speakers or did you just have them reconed for another reason? This makes me wonder because it looks like the one I am getting has all original cones. Do they just wear out after time?

I was thrilled that mine has the CTS's. Sunday cant get here soon enough!

Old speakers are more flexible so they're slightly more acoustically efficient, but over time, hard playing cooks their voice coils and makes them less powerful. Short of a dead speaker, the decision to recone is basically personal preference.

all of mine have had hex-head (socket) type screws .
