Vintage SVT noise

Ah yes 50 Hz, I have a step down transformer, 240V down to 110V, although originally the transformer was output 55-0-55, this was creating massive hum (coupled with the original amp wiring ), a good friend of mine rewired it for 110-0, measured output comes around 118 to 120V as far as I remember, if this makes sense my tech spec is not so good.
 
A low line voltage will cause a massive hum. Some amps have switches for running at either 240 or 120 VAC. When the amp is set for 220 and I plug it in to a 120 VAC outlet, I hear that hum. That's what you must have experienced with half the voltage.
