Vintage Vox basses

I've been meaning to do this for sometime now. Here's my collection. Thought I'd share them with you fellow Vox fans.

All three are in excellent condition.

Nice! And you have the cases too! I thought the type listed as a Delta was a Phantom. My main ax is an Apollo IV with vintage Gibson pup. My band loves it. I gave them the choice of it or my Fender Jaguar or 1967 Bass V and said that the Vox was what they liked. I love it too. And, as you know, Vox has a relativly narrow neck. Something I apprecient having small hands.

Thanks for posting. I had a Spyder IV (violin body) back in 1970.....as I mention in my profile, best neck made of spaghetti I ever played! Fast but would not stay straight to save your life. Would love to have one of those necks to put on a solid teardrop body with a nice pickup....

I had a Delta IV... exactly like the one shown. Cool looking bass, ultra-skinny neck. I liked the bass-boost switch best! And that dark pickguard had a nice dark red shimmering "swirl" pattern in it, not just black as it looks in most photos.

I owned a Saturn, (I'm a Colin Moulding fan and I couldn't locate an Apollo at the time). I thought it sounded plunky & fat. The issue was the intonation above the 12th fret. It was comical. I eventually sold it because I simply couldn't afford to keep a 4th bass. If I had the money, I would have kept it. I know Colin sounds great with his. B.T.W., thanks for showing us your stable, Thornton. You have some amazing pieces in your collection.

Beautiful pieces, man. I love the red teardrop especially. Which one is your favorite?

From a playing perspective, all of them have to be played while standing and all three have the identical neck, so it comes down body shape and effects.

I love teardrop basses, and the 5 sided Phantom/Delta bodies are ultra cool.

For straight out playing, I would have to say the Stinger IV, but there's not much of a difference between them all.

The pickguard on the Delta IV appears to be black in the photo but it's actually dark tortoise shell, hence the "nice dark red shimmering swirl pattern" mentioned above.

If you've got a photo of your Vox bass, post a photo of it for all to see.

Many years ago.... I MIGHT have one, but it was in the early 1970's, shortly after the cooling of the earth's crust, and I lost my instamatic camera to the foraging Pterydactyls.

Your Delta was identical to mine, except I did not have the back "pad", just the snaps for it, and mine had a rectangular case. Same orange plush inside.

Nice collection - my favorite VOX vintage. Love everything about your Delta. When I first started playing, I wanted a white Phantom so much (like Fangs - Paul Revere and the Raiders) but as they were new and pricey (for me) they were plainly out of the question. I bought a used hollow-body Cougar instead.

Recently I made my own version alluding to the teardrop -

Me? - I love the Italian huge-headstock like yours! :bassist:

crazy thin necks though...
