Vintage vs. Modern tone

New to both, actually. Picked up a bass for the first time in... April 2019. Been here on TB less than a month. Loving every minute of it, trying to soak up as much as I can.

Anyway, great advice, thank you. In the spirit of picking apart rigs that have a sound that I think is cool, anyone know what pedal or amp Trent Reznor has on to get the awesome sound he got here? I haven't been able to find it via Google...

I remember wearing out my copy of "Pretty Hate Machine" when it first came out. The man is still a genius.

I may be an old fool, but I’m a bottom feeder (no money to waste) old school fits what we do. I don’t have teenage idols to emulate, at this point it’s even hard to remember being a teenager. Don’t even own a Fender presently and the last one I had was with me over 25 years.

"Vintage" is the obsession of old fools with money to waste and the wish to emulate idols from their teenage years. That's why manufacturers like Fender capitalise on it so much.

Young fools often think like that. Old fools know better.

I miss some of those old goofs. They used to sometimes go on TV where they were all “playing” different instruments too. Or have no strings on the guitar that was supposedly soloing.

Cool—would love to hear more about that project, sounds awesome! And if you can happen to find out how Trent got that amazing sound out of that p bass, I'd love to know. Regardless, good luck with the project!

Fair enough. I played through an EBS combo yesterday that just doesn't clean up. Or maybe it's defective?
