How much of a difference does a good (but modestly priced turntable) make?

The one I have now is a Panasonic that I got with a component system I bought back in the early eighties. Google'n the model number didn't bring up any direct results. I guess-ta-mate it's probably a $120.00 turntable by today's standards.

Depends on your ears, and what you're playing it through.
A good table with a good platter, tone arm, cart. can make all the difference in the world.
Other people won't even notice.
I spent $850+ on my last table alone, then just spent $250 on a cart for it the other day. Will upgrade the tonearm next, but that's down the road a bit.

However, if you don't have a good receiver and decent speakers, even big changes in turntable/cart/arm etc. might only come out as slight changes.

I highly reccomend the Ega P3 as a intermediate turntable, though.

I have a half way decent system. Not Audiophile by any means, but good enough, I suppose.

Here's what I have:

A Marantz SR7002 [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
and Polk RTi8's [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]


If I want to hook up my turntable I will also have to purchase a preamp. The SR7002 does not have a turntable input.

An external preamp is going to serve you better, anyway. And that receiver is otherwise pretty decent. Even the built in one in my Denon is pretty decent compared to the ones in my receivers (quite a few turntables have built in preamps, as well. Something to keep in mind). One day I'll go with an outboard one all together, but I need cash for that as well.
Those speakers will take you pretty far, as well.
I don't know what your budget is, so I can't really go off of that. I highly advise you take a long look at Rega and Denon's though. IMO the Denon (DP-300F) is like the SX of turntables, and the Rega P3 is much a like the USA Fenders. If you can get into the P7 and P9 range, you're starting to get into real audiophile prices where you'll be better off with other brands as well...
As always, IME, IMO, "to me" etc. etc.

For external preamps (or phono stage), there's tons of diy projects out there if you're up for it. Regarding Denon, I have a Denon DL110 cartridge in my Thorens and it's a sweet little cart (MC but doesn't require an MC stage) for relatively little money...

You know, I'm very big on DIY stuff, and it had never once occurred to me to look for a DIY preamp.

anybody had any experience with the latest nad range, particularly the c355? i can buy one at cost through work, but haven't heard anything of it so was wondering if anyone knows how it stands up to the classic nad stuff of a few years ago, like the c320, c352, c370 etc...

as for phono preamps, i thoroughly recommend keeping it seperate as well, even though there was a phono stage in my now defunct pm7200, i stuck with my outboard musical fidelity x-tube.

I obtained one of those 3 in one Crosley players late last year, bought a few records that I liked and then got a ton of vinyl from a friend's mom who was throwing it out. I never really listened to any of it, so I passed it along to friends who wanted it/ appreciated it and I just recently started buying vinyl that I actually like.
