Vinyl spinners club

I can remember when I was 14 I think living in Hamilton....and Sam the Record man would have a special on a Sat. morning. The first 50 people could have a new release for 1 penny when the doors opened. I got Lighthouse's new release that year...I think it may of been my first LP. Had a few 45's before that though.

I used to spend hours looking around record stores trying to decide which 3 or 5 I was gonna get that day. So many to choose from. Sometimes I would just hang around to check out what the next Lp they were going to play in the store would be. Got introduced to lots of new music that way. Now I scan around a few rows of cd's for a few minutes...shrug my shoulders in disgust(nothing but American Idol contestant releases)...and go home and check out things online.

Finally a club I'd like to belong to :) I'm a big fan of vinyl too but my collection is still quite small. I'd say around 200 or so, mostly funk, jazz, hip hop, blues and reggae but I do have plenty of rock and ,oddly enough, reggae classics too thanks to my dad. He gave me his turntable alongside with all his records as he had no use for them as he only listens to cd's these days (I know, the guy is nuts..). There are about 50 original vinyls from many rock greats like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Sabbath and so on. I don't think they actually have any real value, but they are the records I grew up with so they do mean a lot to me.

These days my pride and joy are all Bootsy and Graham vinyls. I think I have every one, but probably I'm missing some records most internet sites don't know about.

There's a big flea market every saturday near me and there are a few "vinyl hustlers" over there so I usually pick up one or two every week. They keep the ones with good bass and saxophone players under the table for me :)

Well sometimes if you don't ask you don't know...

I was talking to a guy I work with about wanting to play my vinyl LPs again, but I don't have a stereo. I never ended up buying one then or now, spent my money on a killer car one though (late 80's).

Turns out he still has all his gear (in mint conditon and working order) from the early 1970's! I'm hoping to go by and pick it up tonight, probably need 2 cars to get it all...:hyper:

Soon I'll be back into the vinyl fold, after 25 years away, once I figure out where this beast will sit...:eyebrow:

In the later 90's i tried really hard to get into vinyl collecting. Sadly, it was done more for the 'hip' factor.

I mainly collected 7"s and 10"s. Lots of crust punk and lots of straightedge hardcore. I think my prized vinyl was my mint Project X 7" :hyper:

I sold it or gave it away to friends as my interest fell.

I have my stereo all setup and running. A friend played a track off an LP on the turntable with the cartridge it came with, and then swapped in a DJ style one he had. The improvement in sound quality was very noticeable.

I'm going to try to buy a better cartridge; are there any technical specifications and/or brand names I should look for? I'm looking for anything around $200 or less (or even used).

Assuming standard 1/2" mount, the Audio Technica AT440MLa is a favorite among vinyl fans on the internet. Do a search. I have one on my turntable (not pictured on my pictures before in this thread) and highly recommend it. Sounds extremely good and tracks better than almost anything else I've ever heard.

There's no "setting up" involved on a P-mount turntable. It's set up as good as can be right out of the box.

Joe if you're interested I have a Grado Green P-mount cartridge that didn't work so well with my old Denon P-mount table that I'm selling used. It only has a few hours on it, asking $60 shipped. It may or may not work well with your table - it's a terrific cartridge.

Then the turntable has a mechanical problem....not a cartridge problem. It sounds like the arm works fine for the first part of a record...but then goes out of alignment as it progresses through the recording. Maybe it's a lubrication issue.

I suggest taking it to a repair facility....and they can figure it out in a few minutes.

No pics of the wax, but I have about 500 floating around the house. Most are Detroit techno/ dancefloor electro, some funk and jazz also (Sun ra and Miles Davis's "a kind of blue" are a must for any collector...)



Enough showing off for me. Some nice setups on here. One thing I don't get is the cheap pickering carts (pickerings a Stanton clone) When your ripping to a pc you want a nice hi-fi cart; the Shure M97XE is pretty much as good as you'll get for the price.

Tonearm setup is also important, as is leveling your deck. The problem in the above post sounds like an anti-skate issue.

Where in MI are you?



plenty of good, local shops in the metro-detroit area still.


I can spend hours digging. I've dropped $300 in vinyl in one day alone...

Lucky you!!! I live on a cow path way up in the north. Nothin but Walmart up here. I just heard that a music store in Traverse City(2 hours away) and the Sam Goody in Petosky(45 min away) are carrying new vinyl. Thousands of titles they claim. Looks like I should cash in while the trend is hot.

That's a shame because I just bought a new cartridge just a few hours before I read your response. Hopefully it will cure some of the distortion problems. If not I might be interested in your cartridge.

I don’t think there are any repair facility's in my area that could fix an SL-10, but I might be able to send away for repair.
We should see what happens after I install the new cartridge.

There are lots of places you can send it to to be repair found online. If the price is gonna get a little high....lots of better tables can be purchased for not much money.
