For a short period violone and contrabass were used interchangeably they were so simlilar.

I have a Violone from the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, it was made by Grunert in Germany. It's a good instrument but is not exactly set-up in a period style. John Pringle makes very nice Violones at a more affordable price, but yet, still expensive. I would think it's almost impossible to find a ply-wood violone. There are "inexpensive" asian wood violones on the Internet but they're still 3-5k.
